I actually dig the 60M Band's channelized method, since you don't have to worry about having a QSO and someone just parks +/- 1kHz from you and just operates, obliterating the FREQ that you are using. And, power-wise, you are on par with every other operator, where just 20W can work everyone you hear, and they don't have to be arm-chair-copy at S+20/9 and over. Just my $0.02 worth. 

The Mercian:
Similar here in the UK, we don't have the WARC 60m band either - just a selection of narrow band segments, some coincide internationally but many don't.  The UK Ministry of Defence call the shots here (no pun intended) and it's only on this band that we are allowed to talk to non-amateur stations.  Once a year there is a weekend where we have QSO's with military cadet radio stations who aren't licenced amateurs.
