Screen Recording Software
jFarley:
Anybody got any recommends on screen video recording apps for Win 7 and Win 8? Target for videos will be You Tube.
Cheap (meaning free) highly desired!
Thanks for any input here.

Here are a few options to your request .

I have never used one of these as a recorder but have been using the VLC as a player for years with great satisfaction.
Especially since you can embed all kinds of codecs into the software to play different types of media, including DVDs with regional code.
I hope this helps you to make a decision.

A year or so ago I tried CamStudio, one of the popular freebies recommended for making video screencaps. I never could get the thing working smoothly - too much stuttering. Might perform better with a proper video card rather than the basic mobo video on my PC.
You might also check with Kilokat7. He's posted several video screencaps from his SDR recordings.

I've used SMR recorder. Seems to work pretty well. I think it's free as well.
I use VLC most of the time for screen capture but have had a tough time getting the audio input set along with the video record. Maybe it's just me.
Kilokat7:
I get good results with Camstudio and the Camstudio lossless codec under Win7. I then upload the AVIs to Youtube using Windows Live Moviemaker at an HD resolution. All free. Unfortunately I haven't figured a way around the 2gb file size limit imposed on the AVI file. 2gb doesn't go far when capturing the SDR's live waterfall.
