-
Hexie again this morning with a fair signal on 4096.3
-
This morning, first time ever I am hearing a beacon at 6626.3 that must be "Rainy". Definitely a rapid, drippy "chirp" and not a buzz.
Using the KX3 receiver this time and also grabbed an audio recording on my new Sony solid state recorder.
-
Hearing the same beacon 0n 6626.3 all this morning and it is still hanging in there even now, just past noon local time. Makes we wonder if this beacon has been off the air for a while and was recently reestablished.
-
Hearing 6626.3 quite well right now on the NRD-525 at 15:25 hours
-
This morning I had good reception of the 2097 KHz "A" beacon at 06:30 hours local or 1:30 UTC using the NRD-525. I checked the other freqs but no luck.

I've been checking 4096 and vicinity every morning for the last week or so, and have heard nothing.

Same here. Hard to say if it is band conditions or hardware failure.
-
Once again, nothing on 4096.
I have A on 2097, but it is extremely weak, so perhaps just poor conditions?

maybe it is time of day and NVIS conditions versus more "normal" propagation?
-
at 6 AM local or 1300 UTC I walked my NRD-525 through the list of known beacons and only heard the 2097 KHz CW beacon "A" with good copy. Supposedly it is in Arizona and I am in California not far from Disneyland. Maybe someone better versed in propagation can comment on the disparity in reception. Some of the Inyo and Joshua tree beacons are much closer and may not have antennas that are good for NVIS at this time of day?
-
08:25 local or 15:25 UTC
No trace of any other beacons but "Rainy" on 6626.3 KHz
-
A beacon, finally!
Literally... I am hearing A on 2097. It was not there when I checked an hour ago, but now being faintly heard around 1052z.
Nothing on 4096. I do have the various Korean clandestines on 3,4 and 6 MHz, however.

I did not hear a single beacon at my usual early hour.
Where is there a list of "Korean clandestines"?
-
There's some logs here: http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/board,18.0.html
-
Hearing A on 2097 with a faint signal at 1053z on 1 Oct 2014.
Nothing heard on or around 4096 kHz. Did Space Aliens steal the beacons?
-
There's some logs here: http://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/board,18.0.html
Oh, I misunderstood. I thought you meant some sort of clandestine HF beacons.
-
This afternoon in the 4096 kHz area I have seen:
4094.5 X
4095.9 4 sec dasher, possibly Coxie
4096.2 1 sec dasher, possibly Hexie
4097.2 Inyo Whooper
So the 4096 cluster still has some residents.
I am not 100% sure the current 4 sec dasher is Coxie, I don't remember the large shift at the beginning of the dash being on Coxie.

I'm hearing A on 2097 at 1052z on 2 Oct 2014. Extremely weak. Nothing heard around 4096 again.

Time in the afternoon?
I am guessing that location, time of day, antenna and conditions are factors we would have in common. Because you don't live all that far from me the main factor might be time of day. I am working from home today so I am checking the listed beacons as often as I can. Otherwise it has been quite a while since I heard a 4 MHz beacon in the morning
-
That was around 0000 UTC. I was not really paying attention, I just tuned across them and remembered this thread was here, asking if the 4096 bunch was still around.
Keep in mind because of my location I often get these guys 24/7 (for the ones on 24/7). Even the harmonic of the Inyo Whooper is a common signal here.

Heard "A" on 2097 KHz at 1400 UTC
Now hearing "Rainy" on 6626.3 KHz 1600UTC
-
Good copy on Rainy at 6626.3 KHz 18:30 UTC
-
"A" on 2097 KHz
decent copy right now at 13:50 UTC
-
Just A this morning on 2097. None of the 4 MHz beacons are audible.
Nothing around 8 MHz, either.
-
Once again it is Groundhog Day in the world of beacons here, only hearing A on 2097, nothing else.
-
I went down the list just now and only "A" on 2097 can be heard. I'd love to know how it is built and the general area it is located in. It is such a consistent performer. Kudos to the creator of it.
-
Just "A" on 2097 KHz this morning
-
A is occasionally popping up out of the noise floor on 2097, but that's about it this morning.
-
A is very weak on 2097 at 1125z. Nothing heard around 4096.
-
Thanksgiving Morning
6700.5 Hexy 2K decent signal
6626.3 Rainy weak but clear
2097 "A" very weak
-
I cannot believe how dead things have been when I have checked on the beacons. I finally heard Hexie 2K on 6700.5 just now
-
Yes, 4 MHz has been dreadful here. Last winter I recall being able to hear four or five beacons at a time. Now, zip. I haven't even tried in a while. Maybe I'll give it a shot tomorrow morning.
-
Once again, nothing at all on 4 MHz. Nor A on 2097. I did have L on 6917 around 0645-0800z.
-
good signal on 6700.5 for Hexie2K right now
-
decent signal from 2097 KHz "A" beacon
-
4096.24 Hexie is just poking up out of the morning noise floor
On 2097 I am hearing a strange mishmash of tones as if other far off signals are wandering in and out.
-
also coming up out of the noise
6626.2 Rocky
6626.3 Rainy
-
I was up early and stepped through some of the beacon frequencies. The radio has been sitting on 4094.5 for a few minutes and then the "X" beacon popped up out of the noise for maybe a minute before a mild fade then came back in maybe 10 seconds.
-
2097 "A" beacon is sounding good with very slight fading
-
the only beacon to be heard so far this morning is a pretty weak Hexie2K on 6700.5 with some light fading
-
Hexie2K on 6700.5 is up for the New Year, a little weak but no fading
-
I haven't tried to hear the "A" beacon on 2097 yet but have not been able to hear any of the 4 MHz beacons in central Illinois yet this winter. I'll keep listening, though. Best times in the past have been a couple hours before sunrise during the winter. I've heard most of them in past years.
Is the "CO" beacon on 3449 kHz defunct? I haven't heard it in a long time and see it's not on the list of current active beacons.

I was camping in Colorado in July and all that I heard was
2097 "A" beacon, weak but clear
4094.5 "X" beacon, clear and weak with slight fading
4096.24 Hexie with the 1 second dash
-
Just now I heard Hexie 2K on 6700.5 fade in briefly and weakly and that is about all I have heard so far. Overall conditions are terrible.
-
Rainy! ;D
6626.3 KHz right now, pretty steady
-
decent signal for Hexie2K on 6700.4 KHz
-
6700.518 KHz for Hexie2K, fairly strong today
I checked the receiver against WWV at 5 & 10 to check for tuning accuracy.
Jim
-
Hexie2k is showing at 6700.524 today, a little higher than my last post
Rainy is pretty good on 6626.300 to where I can get a good trace on the PX3 waterfall
Rocky may be down in the noise on 6626.2 with heavy fading
-
Rainy's signal strength has been slowly increasing on 6626.300 t
Rocky appears to have drifted up to 6626.4 KHz
-
Hexie2K is showing at 6700.500 KHz today, some light fading
Rainy doing okay at 6626.3 KHz
-
good copy on Rainy on 6626.300 with Rocky sometimes rising up strongly in signal strength
-
Hexie 2K on 6700.500
-
Just logging the beacon that Token pointed out today. He suspects that the "dit" might even be a very fas CW letter "D". I am hearing it pretty clearly on 13,559.863 with good copy on my KX3/PX3 combo. Somewhere between 50 to 60 dits it performs an odd but quick double dit. Roughly at 60 seconds
-
update as of tonight
13,558.855 unknown beacon
Here is what I am hearing in Southern California on a video. There is a double PIP in the first second or two of video then 57 PIPs and at 1:02 a double PIP
Video/Audio at https://youtu.be/DLMZOSGsSv8
-
5205.3 KHz SALLY
13,559.86 unknown PIP with 60 second cycle
-
from 06:30 to 06:35 local
13,559.86 unknown PIP with 60 second cycle and solid signal
5205.3 Sally with good signal
2097.3 "A" in CW about 10 secs apart, very strong
-
I've been listening for about 3 hours and now (finally!) some beacons can be heard.
Rocky, Rainy and the unknown ditter in the 6626.2 to 6626.6 range
I have a local bursty wideband noise that is making it a pain in the butt to tune for center frequencies
-
same this morning, a few hours of patience and letting the radio sit with the volume up has let me hear Rainy and the unknown beacon rise up in signal strength.
A little less noise today so the unknown ditter seems to be at 6626.450 today. Rainy is a little harder to spot in the noise but may be around 6626.430
-
Low noise floor so even though this signal is a little it is still good copy
CW "A" beacon on 2097.315
Nothing received on other frequencies at this moment which is 06:40 local
-
Amazing, I actually hear A this morning on 2097 !!
Otherwise, nothing being heard, and I have not heard any of the 4 MHz beacons in months now.
-
That is good news! My morning spin of the dial has come up empty
-
Once again, A is all I hear, around 1030z. Nothing on 4 MHz.
-
I had a quick spin this morning at 06:25 local and "A" was all that I heard. I need another radio expedition out to the desert!
-
Once again, I am only hearing A on 2097, around 1045z.
-
I've not been able to listen for the last few days and update my log. Today I am up a little earlier than usual.
2097.315 "A" beacon very strong and high above the noise
4094.500 "X" is very weak with fading
Nothing on 2018.300, 2025.100, 4097.600, 4086.700, 4096.240, 4096.600, 4097.250, 4102.300, 4106.860, 5205.300, 6626.200, 6626.300, 6668.00, 6700.500
-
For the last couple of hours I have been parked on 6626.450 KHz and listening to the unknown transmitter that makes a sort of fast bwip-bwip-bwip sound. The waterfall pattern is interesting.
Right now I am hearing Rocky coming up out of the noise but no signal from Rainy yet.
-
So far this morning I've only hard Rainy on 6626.300 KHz with really deep fades and sometime pretty long duration
-
Am now hearing Hexie2K on 6700.516 KHz with light fading
-
30 Apr 2015, 1025z: Every so often, A will pop up out of the noise on 2097. I have not heard A for a few days, and I have not heard any of the 4096 beacons for months. Not even during the winter.
-
Once again, just A on 2097 at 1018z on 1 May 2015, and very weak at that. Nothing on 4 MHz.
-
4097.25 KHz. The Whooper is way down in the noise but readable at 07:00 PST local on 5/19/15
-
6626.3 KHz with Rainy coming up in signal strength at 07:40 PST local
-
hexie2k is coming up out of the noise on 6700.50 KHz at 09:47 PST on 5/19
-
I sat on the Whooper's frequency for about 20 minutes and finally started to hear it coming upon 4097.250 at 06:50 PST local, May 24th.
Will keep checking other frequencies as the morning progresses.
-
Hexie 2K is coming up nicely out of the noise as the morning goes on. Overall signal is getting stronger but still has deep fades. Measured frequency of 6700.480 KHz
-
09:55 PST on 5/24
I have Rainy coming up in signal strength on 6626.480 KHz center frequency based on the PX3's waterfall display. Deep fading on the signal.
-
I am pretty excited to report I have clear copy on the "K" beacon on 10,872.309 KHz with mild fading at 06:50 PST 5/25/15
There was nothing on the usual frequencies that I check so I tried this freq for the C, D, P & S cluster of beacons and got lucky to hear K.
(EDIT: earlier when the signal was weaker it sounded like "D" but now it easily reads as "K" and matches the Wiki list)
-
am now hearing "M" on 10,872.409 with a bit of fading 07:09 PST 5/25/15
"M" was listed at this Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letter_beacon which shows the following letters each 0.1 KHz apart
D, P, S, C, A, F, K, M
-
07:45 PST 5/26/15
"K" is very strong on 10,782.300 KHz
"M" is fair with slow fading on 10,782.4 KHz
Locations are supposed to be:
K Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia
M Magadan, Russia
-
Rainy is coming up out of the noise with deep fading on 6626.3 KHz although right now it is hard to tell the exact center frequency
08:03 PST 5/26/15
-
13:25Z 06:25 PST Local
"K" is weak with fading on 10,782.300 KHz
Nothing else to be found at this time on the other frequencies I usually check
-
For this edition of the very early morning, pre-dawn log at 10:50Z 29May15

Russian "K" beacon on 10,287.300 KHz
and "M" beacon on 10,287.400 KHz
-
I was up early and going through my library to rearrange some of my references so I parked the receiver on the Rssian beacon cluster. Sure enough by 06:30 PST local I heard
"K" rising up out of the noise on 10,872.3 KHz
-
12:36Z 31may

First I will say thank you! A huge pleasure to make your acquaintance.
Next is the humor alert for what I am going to type.
I have never used that locator system so as our American saying goes it was "all Greek to me". it was with pleasure and thanks to Google I can see that you are just north of Athens which must be a great spot to hear things from.

Only a short time available to listen this morning
13,528.4 M is weak but steady
10,872.3 K clear but is also weak
4097.25 maybe heard the Whooper, but wishful thinking?

Jim;
These posts are greatly appreciated, and I am looking forward to going after these a bit more seriously when the season rolls around!
-
Wow! That is very nice of you. I wanted to share what is possible even in an urban environment. Different beacons can be heard at different times of year and times of day so check all of the known beacons and you may be pleasently surprised. Ever since I first heard the Russian beacons I've been more patient and willing to search a while longer.
Regards,
Jim

Guess "A on 2097.3 KHz" must be in "Cal-ee-fawnia"
It is reported to be in AZ, not CA.

Woke up extra early today and ran the radio while reading a novel
04:20 PST
2097.300 KHz. Letter A
7039.300 KHz Letter K
05:10 ST
Windy! It was 300 Hz low from the listed frequency at 4102.000KHz and very weak. Probably why I missed it so many other times. The PX3 display alerted me visually but a little tuning around would have easily found it. The curse of running narrow receive bandwidths means The possibility of missing hearing off-frequency beacons.

Have to admit I got excited because I can just hear the Inyo Whooper rising above the noise on 4097.25 KHz

Not only could I not hear any of the 4 MHz beacons (for what, a year now?) even A on 2097 was barely audible.

Yeah but I keep trying. I put them all in memory and just go through them all and like today I was rewarded with a brief opening of the Whooper!

At 06:30 T was pretty strong but has weakened quite a bit by 07:00 PST. It is also low in frequency at 7039.260 KHz so it is likely a hobbyist beacon
No other beacons audible at the moment

A late start this morning...
weak but readable, got the Inyo Whooper on 4097.25
Rainy on 6626.3
Hexie2K on 6700.4 a bit low
-
I heard A on 2097 this morning. It's been there the last few mornings. Still nothing on 4 MHz. Very strange.

I heard A on 2097 this morning. It's been there the last few mornings. Still nothing on 4 MHz. Very strange.
I've had to try checking off frequency a bit or my narrow filter settings exclude hearing some of these beacons. That is where my visual displays of spectrum and waterfall have helped. Also checking at all times of day rather than traditional windows has sometimes helped me.
-
I started listening around 05:30 PST and just around 06:10 I started to hear the "A" beacon on 2097.310 KHz come up out of the noise.
-
Surprisingly, I did not have A this morning. I tried for T on 7039 and didn't hear it either, but since A is usually a regular here, I took the lack of it as a sign of poor conditions.
-
weak but readable, deep fades, Inyo Whooper on 4097.25
-
Hexie2K on 6700.493 KHz. Fair signal for about an hour with very mild fading
Jim
Orange County, CA
-
Now hearing Rainy on 6626.3KHz
-
2097.3 KHz. "A" beacon 20dB above noise at peaks and 10dB fades
7509.2 KHz. Russian "F"beacon. Very weak
-
Went for a morning run and am checking signals again
6700.44khz Hexie2K with some deep fades
Jim
orange County, CA
Using the KX3 & PX3
-
Clear, cold and windy today.
Pretty sure that I am hearing Windy on 4079.560 KHz but the leading morse code characters sound funny: bad keying or some sort of distortion. Very weak
"A" beacon is strong on 2097.310KHz
Possibly hearing Kelsie on 4096.36 KHz
Jim
Orange County, CA
-
Hexie2K on 6700.406KHz. Fair signal with mild fading. Low in frequency with this cold weather
Jim
Orange County, CA
-
If I am reading my PX3's display correctly, Hexie2K has drifted up today to 6626.510KHz. The unknown ditter might be underneath it
Jim
Orange County, CA
-
2097.310 KHz. "A" beacon 25dB above noise floor at peaks and occaisional fades to the noise floor
4080.001 KHz. Something weak with a waterfall pattern that looks like Morse but the audio is not so distinct. I am unsure if this is the TMP beacon or just something random
7509.2 KHz Russian letter beacon F weak but readable
Jim
Orange County, CA
-
4080.001 KHz TMP Beacon. Despite the bad keying I have been watching the waterfall display lay out the Morse code and am certain this is the TMP beacon 400HZ higher than listed
-
2097.310 KHz letter A beacon
4096.365 KHz Hexie
-
2097.310 KHz letter A beacon about 10dB above the noise floor

I ran a quick check at 05:30 PST and found nothing. Now back home and clearly hearing Rainy which is high in frequency at 6626.450 KHz and pretty strong with some fades
Hexie2k is right on 6700.500 running 10 to 15 db above the noise floor with some fast, deep fades
-
04:00 PST
2097.310 KHz letter "A" with light fading, peaks at 20dB above the noise floor
7509.200 KHz Russian letter "F" weak but readable
-
Hexie peeking above the noise on 4096.265 KHz then fading out
Rainy is coming up, may be low in frequency? 6626.2 KHz. Wish I had better reception to map out frequency vs. temperature over the year
Above the center frequency of Rainy I see four almost evenly spaced signals. 6626.44 , .52 , .63 and .71 that I guess could be called buzzers? There is fading and the noise floor is coming up so a little hard to tune the correct centers
-
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/579/23214636985_3c10901ff8_m.jpg)
about the middle of the left half you can see the horizontal traces of Rainy. To the right you can see at least three of the unknown signals. Could just be local computer junk for all I know ;D
-
here is a good shot of Hexie2K

A weak signal from low power beacon "IZ3DVW/BEACON" on 3576.5 kHz CW, at 04:21 local time (02:21 UTC).
-
Generally terrible conditions lately especially since the cloudy weather prevents a number of the California beacons from operating off of solar power. During the rainstorms I basically caught no signals except maybe "A" late at night
Briefly heard "A" on 2097.310 KHz, very weak. Maybe the clear weather will allow some beacons to charge up and transmit today. Will keep listening
-
6700.380 Hexie2K is getting stronger but goes through quick, deep fades. Frequency is low again so must be cold at the transmitter
-
6700.400 Hexie2K i
I've been watching it for a couple of hours and it has been going up in frequency, a bit over 100 Hz of change so maybe the old lava rocks surrounding it are warming up in the sun? ;D

I saw the movie and am finally reading the book "The Martian". As I am reading I've had Hexie2K chirping in the background. Reminds me of Sputnik or some other lost mechanical marvel pulsing out tiny bursts of radio frequency to anyone who cares. Reading is also a good time to sit on a silent frequency to see what pops up after a long absence.
6700.411 KHz Hexie2K with very mild fading
6626.429 KHz Rainy (is always a challenge to guess at what the center frequency is)
-
cold temps are shifting beacons lower
6700.350 KHz Hexie2K weak signal just coming up out of the low noise floor, about -110 dB on my PX3's display.
6626.300-ish KHz Rainy is barely in there but so weak I cannot see anything on the spectrum or waterfall display. Judging from the sound when I tune I think that it is lower than what I listed
-

6626.300 KHz Rainy coming in weak
6700.500 KHz Hexie2K coming in weak with quick fades
Weather is windy and rainy today so it may affect the beacons that need solar power

Getting up before dawn is too much trouble now but sometimes there is little to be heard so I'll park on one frequency for a while. Today it was the Inyo Whooper and just now it came up out of the noise for a minute. It sweeps from high to low so today the center was 4097.160 Khz with a signal that peaked 15 dB above the noise floor while it was there.makes me wonder if it needs new batteries and a better solar system.

Have you tried to hear Stumpy yet? 7000.65 kHz or so, varies slightly in freq over the day. Very short dit every 22 seconds. In the areas you were in it should have been pretty clear.
One of these times you come up to the high desert drop me a line before you do, maybe we can put a face to a name.
T!

I did not know about Stumpy and it looks as if the beacon list has been updated a lot since I printed a copy a while back.
Will definitely keep you in mind when I run out that way for another radio expedition.

I haven't been following these beacons for a couple years, since I moved to a new location. I cannot yet find a way to put up an antenna here that will receive well in the 4000 kHz range.
Meanwhile, I finally started playing around with KiwiSDR stations on line. Selecting the Mojave Desert station, I can hear the various beacons close by wherever the receiver is. Also the W beacon on 4102.7 kHz.
At my old location a few years ago I could hear the TMP beacon around 4079.6 kHz. Apparently that one is defunct now? Also the beacon on 6668 kHz no longer seems to be there.
Gotta do more playing around with the Web SDR for now ...

I was out camping for most of last week and was only able to listen on Tuesday. The noise level was so low I could hear the Russian "M" on 7039 KHz almost all morning long. That was also when I last heard Windy operating normally but with a very low voltage. If I knew where it was I'd bring out a new battery!

Back on Nov 12th Windy was sending 4 dits (H) and nothing else
4102.840 KHz Windy Good signal. Only sending 3 dits (S) and nothing else
-
This morning I was up early and heard Windy sending 3 dits (S) for a while and after a couple of hours I heard it start sending four dits (H). I am speculating that the slight rise in battery voltage correlates with a break in the clouds that have been over the deserts.
-
Windy has regained enough battery charge to start sending normal telemetry
4102.840 KHz Windy. Fair signal. Breezy conditions. Temperature 62 degrees. Battery at 12.4 volts

I will try to listen and see if it resumes normal operation and what the reported voltage is
-
Windy had a brief recovery when there was some sunshine but has since gone back to 3 dits with these winter storm cutting off the sunlight. If the owner of Windy wishes to contact me I might be able to help with improving the power situation. Bigger panel or battery or both could be brought out there. I have a 4x4 and can hike too.
It was bad enough we lost the 2097 "A" beacon. Don't let Windy die too! ;D

Satellite images show most of the Mojave desert to be clear skies. If Windy's panel is oriented due south with a 45 degree tilt it should have started charging the battery around 7:30 AM PST. If the battery cannot recover on a day like today then the panel is too small or the battery is probably damaged from being deeply discharged for too long.
-
Just found it on at 2035 utc. Up to 11.7 volts and its windy

Here in the US we are convinced that Windy is off the air. When it was functioning the only CW it sent was the letter W.
Windy was located roughly in the expanse of the Mojave desert in Southern California.
Glad to see you check in! I’ll bet you can monitor all sorts of cool signals.
EDIT TO ADD: here is a recording of Windy sending telemetry of battery voltage & temperature https://youtu.be/twokwXWFpnE
