I got an e mail from someone a month ago and they asked me if I was hearing a dasher up on 4070.3 khz...
I listened occasionally for it but the static levels caused me to move on to a higher band where the qrn was not so bad. Then I stopped listening all together.
This morning at 1200 utc I decided to listen again I was up anyway, and low and behold there it was clear as day but very weak...a dash every 2 secs is what I counted...
this went on for 20 mins and then it faded down a couple of times into the noise and then back out of the noise...about the third fad down, it never appeared again.
I found the strange e mail address of the person who asked me to listen for this beacon and it doesn't exist any longer which adds to the Radio mystery.
P.S. I haven't heard the 4096 beacons in a long time mainly because I have a carrier on that freq. I haven't heard the X beacon either...so having a 4070 beacon to listen to this winter will be fun....
-
Tuned to it here just after 0300 utc and hearing it with QSB amidst the static crashes.
Weak but comes up out of the noise regularly at the moment.

Pretty good copy this evening...time 0150 utc...
should be great copy when the static levels drop...
kind of nice to hear something once again...
-
Oct 8... time 1100utc freq. 4070.3 khz 30 dashes per min...
nice copy
P.S. no copy on the 4096 group.
-
Better copy tonight on this beacon ...wonder if it is out in the desert...time 0220Utc
no 4096 or the old X beacon, haven't heard it in a long time
-
Hearing it barely above my noise level at 0510Z - thought I heard a few dashes an hour or so ago, but thought my ears were playing tricks on me. It was probably there all along, as it fades in for a minute, and then out again, and back in about every minute or so right now.
-
I'm hearing the 4070 beacon for the first time, 1006z on 11 Oct 2016. Fairly weak, but comfortably above the noise floor.
We should probably add this beacon, as well as SHORTY, to the list of currently active beacons?
-
Nice copy again...time 1154 utc...
Chris,
Yep I think you should list it...I think it has been on for a while and the radio Gods
welling it will keeps beeping away giving the SWLers like us something to listen too, that will dance
around in the ether.
I have been trying to come up with a name but haven't , any ideas? Maybe 4070 is enough of a name.
-
I added it to the list, as well as shorty. Let me know if you think there's anything that needs to be removed from the list, or at least marked as possibly inactive. Or if there's anything missing.
-
Heard again this morning 12 Oct 2016, from about 1030 to pas 1130 UTC. Nice to be hearing at least one 4 MHz beacon again!
-
Started hearing it at 1100 utc this morning...I remember hearing the 4089 dasher years ago..
-
Oct. 13
I had it for about 15 min solid from 0200-0215 utc then it just faded away into the ether...then some SSB Spanish was around the Freq.
-
Caught this again tonight @ 0300z. Pretty weak at my QTH (had to tweak it with the cw filter) but has had some QSB with better copy on the fade-ups.
-
4 mc has sucked lately...but did manage to catch 4070.3 at 2300 utc this morning.
-
Nice reception this morning, 4070.5 kHz.
-
Heard again this morning, 25 October 2016, starting at 1100z.
-
Heard this again last night (weak but definitely in there) at 0215z, but when I checked later (around 0500) I no longer copied it.
I'm often surprised when I hear it, and surprised when I don't. I can't seem to predict just when I'll hear it.
-
Nice copy today at 1100-1130 utc...then just disappeared like a switch was hit.
-
getting a few fade ups on the 4070.3 beacon time is 0100 utc
-
I am hearing 4070 this morning at 1123z, 14 Nov 2016. And now, a minute later, it is gone. And now it's back ;D
-
Nov 14 time 0400 utc good fad ups on the 4070.3 beacon...
I cannot hear any of the desert beacons...do to a very strong 4096 carrier present at my location...but year ago I heard them every night.
So I'm glad to finally hear one...some times I fall asleep listening on a portable...dah dah dah puts me to sleep.
-
Once again a good signal from 4070 this morning, 15 Nov 2016, around 1110z.
-
Nov 17 0300 utc good copy on my portable, condx are really starting to pick up.
-
Is this a night time only beacon? This morning (19 Nov 2016) I was recording it and it turned off at 1243:37 UTC. Signal was there, not strong but at least 7 or 8 dB above the noise floor, and then it was gone, no fade out. I watched for about 10 minutes and no return.
I did notice another signal that could be a beacon, but might not be, on 4072 kHz. It is a 3.75 second dash sent every 6.1 seconds. There is a second part to this signal, at the end of each dash the signal pauses for 0.22 sec and then shifts freq to 4071.93 kHz, and sends a very short dit, about 0.14 sec long. I can't think of a digital signal that matches these parameters with any pilot tones or that kind of thing, so if it is a resting digital signal I don't know what it is.

This evening Nov 24 0030 utc nice fads ups
-
Nov 29 1150 utc I was sitting in the shack and heard a very nice signal from the 4070 beacon....
Still can't hear any of the cluster 4096 group because of the strong carrier I have on 4096...but it is nice to hear
another beacon...X must have crapped out where ever it was...I still listen down on 3450 Khz for OK it has been years since I
have heard it...
-
I heard 4070 earlier this morning, around 1130z, along with Shortly on 7998.3. No sign of A.
-
Nov. 30 Time 1230 utc.. Q5 copy...
-
Dec 3 time 1100 Utc very steady copy not moving the s meter but non the less good copy...
Since only a few have heard this beacon it must be a very low power one 100 Mw or even less...
I sent an e mail to someone that might know something about this beacon. His response was,
"nothing known at this time", he did not think it was in the SW desert area.
Still no copy on the 4096 group. A is in there every night...
-
Weak copy of 4070 this morning at 1118z. And I heard A earlier this morning. Nothing from the 4096 cluster here in ages, either. Shorty is doing well on 7998.
-
Per dawn fad ups are being copied... 1330 utc
-
another good night for the 4070 beacon time 0200 utc

Time 1230 utc...
-
Dec. 13 1230 utc...q5 copy...
-
Dec 17 time 1130 utc big signal S 4...the best copy as of yet...
-
Dec 23 time 1300 utc, nice fad ups starting at 1300 and now moving the S meter 1-2 units thats the strongest yet...
dawn enhancement. You have to love mother nature.
I think I'm going to give the 4070 beacon and the 4107 beacons two names respectively : Jack and Jill
I don't hear Jill often and when I do it is generally very weak but at least I have heard it enough times that I feel certain it is a beacon.
-
Dec 23 Time 0120 utc 4070.3 khz nice signals tonight

Dec 26 0115 utc...q 5 nice signal...

Am hearing a beacon signing NZ or ZN, letters run together that is above the 4070 dasher at about 4070.328.
Perhaps the dasher has changed ident or this is a new one. 0045 utc here

-
Listening for the ZN beacon but instead copied "GT", repeating every 3 seconds, 4070.33, 0601z
Some slow QSB but very Q5 on fade ups here into Northern CA
-
I have a beacon on 4070.43 at 1220z on 9 Jan 2017, sending CW. Very weak, not sure of all of the letters, but I do hear an R in there.
Faded out at 1227z.
-
Copying GT at the moment on 4070.3 khz...it seems to be stronger then ZN that
pops up from time to time this morning on this freq. This has been interesting indeed.
