Either Frey or Henley was a Philosophy major at Arizona State. "Hotel California" was lifted straight from Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialist classic "No Exit". The Hotel California was a place the unaware dead went in "No Exit".

Clarification: Frey has long said it was from a 1965 novel by John Fowles, The Magus https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45274174
"In other words, any meaning Hotel California has is unintended rather than hidden. The atmosphere of a man in an unfamiliar rural setting, unsure about what he's witnessing, mimics - says Frey - the 1965 novel The Magus."
I'm not sure Frey went to college, Henley attended a pair in Texas.
In contrast, Sartre's classic is an example of being tortured by those around you and not recognizing that is your fate.

Come on, Frey got caught stealing from Sartre and was trying to lie his way out of it. The Cure at least admitted they lifted "Killing An Arab" from Camus's "The Stranger".
