Title: Auroral Conditions Possible This Weekend
Post by: ChrisSmolinski on April 12, 2013, 1257 UTC
The solar flare that occurred on Thursday generated a CME that is likely to hit Saturday evening. A geomagnetic storm is likely, with forecast Kp between 6 and 8. This will likely cause auroras in the northern US.

And destroy pirate radio, of course.

It will probably, but not certainly wipe out HF broadcasting. Last night I had good visual aurora and still had pretty good copy on Red Mercury Labs. Several times I had similar aurora conditions and could hear Blue Ocean and True North. Signal strength is lower and noisier with aurora but it can still happen.

The last aurora caused weird AM band conditions, but no new logs from the south... maybe this one will be fruitful.  One aurora last spring bagged me a Mexico City station on 1500 -- it was even readable barefoot on my boombox.
