Title: Pirate listeners younger than 30
Post by: Andrew Yoder on March 19, 2023, 2051 UTC
I know this topic was brought up a few years ago, but I wondered if we have any shortwave pirate listeners who are younger than 30 right now who are active on the HFU?

So your portable radio is older than you?

I've got Philco tabletop that would be as old as Elvis if he still walked the Earth and a Drake R-3 that's nearly as old as I am.

I have several radios more than 30 years old (I'm 52). I have three kids, with my oldest about to turn 21 this summer. I've tried to get them interested in radio and DXing at various times, but they all see radio as an "ancient" medium. It's hard to dissuade them of that as AM and shortwave stations keep going off the air!

I have an old Airline tabletop that literally is the same age as The King, manufactured and sold in 1935. My dad got it when he was in med school and needed something to hear the news on, but it has a SW band (only from above the AM band to around 6.5 MHz) which was mostly deaf but used to be able to get WWV on 5 MHz (but never 2.5). Now it's completely dead, but the AM side works well enough despite being about 110 kHz off (e.g. tune to 960 kHz to copy KOA on 850) and still sounds great. It's my baseball radio in the summer.

Just me?

If we are on the topic of our oldest radios, I think I have you all beat with my Westinghouse Batteryless Receiver from 1928  ;D
