Title: How bad does Radio Cairo sound?
Post by: Paul B. Walker, Jr. on April 27, 2023, 1911 UTC
They've been this way for at least a decade or two.. theyre even worse than Cuba or Iran on SW.

Take a listen to their Turkish language service on 9850khz from a Cairo transmitter site to the middle east at 1843UTC on April 8th in alaska:

And some days the signal is usually good and clear without the distortions

Hmm... From that recording they've improved. The 60 hz. hum is down about 2/3's and the announcer doesn't sound like Charlie Brown's teacher.

At least Radio Cairo adheres to a schedule which is more than RHC can say.

hmm.. no. I've never heard Cairo sound good, clear and without distortion.. ive never even heard them sound as good as cuba does.. and thats good by cuban standards, which is far less than others.

I applaud their consistency, plus you always know it's them.

Cairo and Cuba are victims of old Soviet era transmitters and no new parts for decades. The audio sections had to withstand years of Fidel and Nasser ranting as loud as they could for hours on end. It takes a toll. The heat and humidity of Cuba, plus the 2-4 hurricanes a year don't help either.

Iran sounded ok up until the early part of the century. Their transmitters are from the time of the Shah. I guess the frying pan heat caught up with them? Anyway, it's all sermons and prayers, everyone memorizes them in religious school, Son of Satan.
