MIAMI — Country singer Slim Whitman has died at the age of 90 in Florida.
His son-in-law, Roy Beagle, says Whitman died Wednesday of heart failure.
Whitman's career began in the late 1940s, and his tenor falsetto and ebony mustache and sideburns became global trademarks. They were also an inspiration for countless jokes thanks to the ubiquitous 1980s and 1990s TV commercials that pitched his records.
He was a serious musical influence on early rock. In the British Isles, he was known as a pioneer of country music for popularizing the style there. Whitman also encouraged a teen Elvis Presley when the young singer made his professional debut.

I thought I'd heard he'd died years ago?
I saw Slim perform the National Anthem at the 1981 Peach Bowl. I'd heard he always wore red socks. You couldn't tell during the performance as he was standing. I happened to see him signing autographs at the half. From the side I could see under the table. There were the famous red socks.
When my wife makes me go somewhere dressy, I always put on my blue suit, black cap toed shoes, and a pair of red socks in honor of Slim. People always comment on them or look our way in admiration during the event.
Oddly, she never wants to go back to those places. She must be envious of all the attention I get?
I once grew a pencil mustache in honor of Slim, too. But that's another wife and another story.
Rest In Peace, Slim. Ace Cannon and Boxcar Willie were but pale imitators of you.

I'm sure that MUST be why your wife behaves that way...
I didn't know much about his music until I saw this obituary. I went to Youtube and listened to "Indian Love Call", which I thought was pretty good. His singing style reminded me very much of Chris Isaak.

That song makes my head want to explode.

That, dear sir, is some fine world class trolling (http://youtu.be/Nd4D0aR_W9k?t=53s).

Wow, cranky, aren't we? Someone got up on the wrong side of the dipole today, I suspect.

Wait, I forgot to say, "More Belinda!"

Belinda only goes for nattily attired men, like me.
Sometimes you can be so envious, Al.

Just last weekend Kim Andrew Elliott used Slim Whitmans "I'll remember you" to simulate interference on the VOA radiogram program...seriously
