Title: UNID 6945 USB 2257 UTC 17 Oct 2023
Post by: Charlie_Dont_Surf on October 17, 2023, 2300 UTC
Amazingly, I'm in here before Danger Kitty.  ;D

S9+10 on the K1VL SDR in Vermont.

Sound effects with a lot of reverb or feedback and occasional audio cut outs. There is no "intelligence" being conveyed, no music or speech - other than that used as a base for the reverb.

No, I don't think it's a digital UTE.

Is someone is experimenting with their new sound effects box?
Is Zeke on the mushrooms again?
On the other hand - the cutting out is making me think that someone is trying to play music and turned all their knobs up to eleven. All of them at the same time. And playing themselves back from an SDR for reverb. Doing this by accident. (Or maybe intentionally.)

I used to listen to a lot of experimental music stuff with a lot of effects and no commercial potential. At least that stuff had some sort of rhythm.

Bottom line: I don't know.

Stopped at 0028 UTC but for how long? Back at 0029.

I have it with a fair signal, but the audio effects make it unreadable.   Not fun listening.

I've been listening to this for the last 20-25 minutes and can't quite figure out what kind of xmsn this is. No, it doesn't take a lot to entertain me.

The first minute or so I kept thinkng it was some really messed up audio; it almost sounded like music, but nothing I could do would clear it up. So, I think it's just some digital mode meant for someone besides me.

It does have some characteristics of QAM, but it's not. It doesn't seem to be SSTV, FAX, FSK, DRM or anything else I can decode. Doesn't look or sound like QAM or SSTV.

Best guess: polyrhymthmic synth jazz. Or an IS for robots.

2320: Strong S9 signal of some type of noise. Like other posters not sure wheat to make of it.

Good signal. At least some of the effects are attempts to find something one could call decent effects. I remember doing stuff like this when I found my first few audio effects programs. The amount of distortion available seems to be drastically limited. Anyway, I wonder if this comes with a good QSL.

6830 sounds a bit better and the signal is louder. Just saying….

S7 with the Raleigh, NC KiwiSDR.

2336 UTC-No idea

This can be heard on KiwiSDRs in Europe (strong) and Asia (weak), either a very powerful pirate or some broken utility.

A little birdie told me that - whatever it is - seems to be coming from the southeast US or thereabouts.

It's interesting because this is approximately the same frequency as that Link-11 transmission that has been there for years, every night, but has been absent for the past few nights. That particular transmitter has been TDoA'ed to roughly the Florida east coast, just as the little birdie told me just now.

Hmmm... I bet this is a US military transmitter gone haywire, possibly the same one that transmits the Link-11, and it is creating IMD (intermodulation distortion) products at 6830 and 5714 Khz (and probably other places) too.

EDIT - Whoops, the Link-11 is on ~6943 now too. Oh well, there goes that theory.

0120 Initially thought it was SSTV which was detuned.

Solid signal with fading S4 - S7.

The idea of a transmitter going haywire seems the most likely to me also.

0131 - Unintelligible. Audio loop feedback-ish sounding.

S8

I hope by reporting this we are not encouraging more of the same..
