Listening via the NA5B SDR near Washington, D.C., where the signal is loud and clear ...
2157 UTC: Casey Kasem intro into "What's Love Got to Do With It?" by Tina Turner at No. 29.
2201 UTC: Casey back, answering a listener question about the best-selling comedy album in history.
2203 UTC: "What About Me?" by Kenny Rogers and Kim Carnes at No. 28.
2207 UTC: Ad break on this recorded program.
2211 UTC: "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama at No. 27.
2214 UTC: Casey back on the mic talking about the bands with the most No. 1 hits during the 1980s, followed by Hall & Oates at No. 26 with "Out of Touch."
(Based on this, this countdown's from the fall of 1984, when I was a couple months away from turning 14.)
2219 UTC: Casey introduces the song "The Warrior" by Scandal at No. 25.
2222 UTC: Casey with introduction to No. 24, "I Feel for You" by Chaka Khan. I checked, and I can hear this signal weakly via the Winnipeg, Manitoba, SDR and very, very faintly via the Northern Utah SDR. No luck directly on my radio further west here.
2227 UTC: Ad break.
2229 UTC: News break from this recording of 100.7 The Otter (which is out on the Oregon Coast, where I formerly lived), then more ads.
2233 UTC: Casey back with his introduction of No. 23, "Better Be Good to Me" by Tina Turner.
2237 UTC: Casey promoting "America's Top 40" affiliates and then introducing No. 22, "Strut" by Sheena Easton.
2240 UTC: Casey talking about the recent history of the next artist, Diana Ross, and introducing song No. 21 "Swept Away."
2246 UTC: Ad break.
2248 UTC: "Bop 'Til You Drop" by Rick Springfield at No. 20. (NOT a good song!)
2320 UTC: I checked back at the Northern Utah SDR and I can now hear Casey at a readable level, introducing a Rod Stewart song, as the "gray line" moves west.
Thanks for the music and the hit of teenage nostalgia, 77LJS!

Tuned in at 2222 utc on Barrington Hills IL sdr with fair/poor S5-S9 signal with fading, old American top 40 countdown program from 20 Oct 1984 including old commercials, old CBS newscast, at 2233 switched to Brookfield WI sdr with better signal, song "better be good to me" by Tina Turner, at 2244 switched to Fair Hill MD sdr with good S9+10 signal and can use IQ for good fidelity, at 2316 request by writer to AT40 for song "hell is for children" by Pat Benatar. At 2325 gave 77LJS ID and said goodbye then off. Back then I never listened to AT40 because I listened to alternative rock and NPR but it's nice to hear AT40 now, thanks for the program.
