Title: eLORAN Tests 1250 UTC 9 FEB 2024
Post by: ChrisSmolinski on February 09, 2024, 1251 UTC
Heard here at 1250 UTC.

From the time-nuts mailing list:

Eloran long test from now to August or September.

Very good news today there is a long test running in the Western US
and 3 sites are now active.
Sites at Fallon, NV; George, WA; and Havre, MT are all up and running now.
GRI is 5990. Not sure you’ll hear them so far away but thought I would
let you know in case you see any skywave.
At least two of these stations have significant power. Not sure on
Havre MT.

Oh, this is exciting. I'll have to break out my portable LORAN-C receiver and see if can pick up anything here.

Ha, what is old is new considering LORAN was decommissioned some time ago.

I used to have a nice Austron LORAN time and frequency standard back in the days. As LORAN uses cesium-based frequency standards it made for a nice disciplined standard until the services were decommissioned.

Nothing heard on 100 kHz so far (20:00 UTC 09 Feb 2024) but worth keeping an ear out.

Anyone know if there is any software (preferably free) available to decode the signal?

All the KiwiSDR receivers have a eLORAN decoder.  You select it from the extensions drop down menu.  It hasn’t been updated to include these new sites though.

I have the eLORAN test here, looks like one strong one and one that is just barely coming in. My old LORAN-C receiver hasn't been able to pick them up yet.
The Kiwis now have it, GRI 5991 (its really 5990, but using 5991).

Good signals tonight

My old handheld LORAN-C even picked up two of the stations:
