Did it 10 years ago when he was still alive.
I always found it ironic that Reed said he wrote "Waiting For My Man" while listening to "I Wanna Hold Your Hand." on the radio. Talk about songs geared for two vastly different audiences.

Lou Reed was a great songwriter.
Those songs aren't for different audiences,
you are comparing apples and oranges.
One is commercial pop that tends towards saccharine conventionalities,
the other shows what a rock tune can be when you discard stupid conventions.
Pop music is for the masses, so it makes itself bland and generic to suit ordinary tastes.
Music like Lou Reed's is specific, therefore easily shot down by narrow pinched minds.

Conventionalities??? Hmmm.........Dub doesn't use big words like that. Al Gore, you sneaky SOB, I'm on to you now!
Where did I leave Manbearpig's phone number?

Wasn't Lou Reed Donna Reed's husband?
