Title: beacon like signal on 7999khz
Post by: chucks on September 11, 2009, 0246 UTC
Hi all, just tuning thru the 8mhz area and came across a a very strong signal on 7999khz usb.
It was sending .5 second pulses with about .4 second spacing. It was peaking about s8 most of the time.
It just stopped at 0239z, I've been sitting here waiting but have heard nothing else.
Has anyone else heard something similar to this on the frequency before??

Thanks
Chuck

0300z  the signal just came back up, started with a steady tone then into the pulses.. still very strong..

Hi Tube''  no this isn't OTHR, I know what that sounds like. I just turned the radio on (1238z) and it's on very weak now. Well I've got places to go and things to do, so the wife says so I be back later and see what this may turn out to be.

Hi Chuck,

I've heard this one before. I want to say about a year ago. No idea what/who it is. I'll try for it again.

While looking in the 8 MHz area for beacons I notice this sig last night and set a recorder on it for several hours.

It would start on the hour and half hour with a 1 kHz tone.  After a few seconds (varied length) it would go into a pulsed mode.  The pulses would be differing lengths each cycle.  The longest pulse duration I noted was over 1 second long, with equal off time.  The shortest I saw was about 149 msec on and off times (298 msec total cycle time).

And no, this is not an OTHR.  With a pulse length this long and no swept RF (chirp) the minimum range resolution for the fastest pulse would be about 45000 km.

Maybe it's the boys up in Alaska playing with their mega-power moonbounce array again?
