I am not quite sure what this was, a pirate, or some bizarre mixing product. It appeared at 0908 UTC on the SDR recording, with an OM talking.
Lots of fading in and out, but a good signal on peaks. From the look of the signal on the waterfall there was a strong barber pole effect from the path on the hairy edge of going long (hence all the fading and relatively strong peaks).
The audio was rather distorted, so even with the relatively good signal, it was difficult to understand what was being said. It sounded like it could have been some sort of a sports talk radio program?
Off at 0913, then back on at 0914, possibly with a YL? until 0718. Then a few very short transmissions heard between 0718 and 0719. It definitely looked like the carrier was going off and on, vs fading out.
Back on at 0926, and on and off until 0930, when it came on and stayed on until a big peak in the signal at 0944, then a fade out (vs carrier dropped) at 0945. It sounded like possibly an OM and YL talking.
Someone testing? The carrier frequency was extremely stable the entire time, 6849.96 kHz.
The reason I don't think it was a mixing product is that I was only hearing what sounded like audio from one station.
Did anyone else catch this on their overnight SDR recording?

I get a mixing product here pretty much every day from CBC Vancouver 0n 690 kHz and their simulcast on 6160 khz. Both transmitters are at the same location. It can be quite strong here during the day about 225 miles NW of Vancouver. Perhaps, later in the evening, it can be strong enough to be heard on the east coast? Just a thought.

That is an interesting possibility. I have never noticed it before, but perhaps conditions were just right?

I am hearing this again, starting at 0100z on 18 Jan 2013. Heard a bit of sports talk.

Also seeing and hearing bits of this at 0110 UTC. It's definitely weak for me, and it seems there are breaks in the carrier. My initial thought was something arcing over sporadically, perhaps in an transmitter or antenna somewhere, causing a mixing product/spur/whatever. Or some other type of failure in a broadcast system.

I moved it here to other, as it really does sound more and more like some mixing product / spur.

Noting it here also, about 6849.95. I checked the difference freq (5470) also, but that is covered by Link-11 here.
Interestingly, there is a distorted AM with intermittent carrier/audio on 5479.95. I don't know what that is yet.
After about 10 min of back and forth, the px on 6850 sure seems // 5480. I think I need help with my math...
