Hey All,
Chris, I was wondering about the TIS of Doom and whether they were still on .It's been a LONG time since I copied them . I recently heard a HINT of something , but who knows, WAY too weak .
This brings us back to the old question : If I were running a station , would I put in on 1710 in hopes that the "general public " would stumble across it (IF the NJ TIS doesn't wipe it out ) or would I go clear on 1720 ? Personally, I'd do 1720 , with the jury out re advanced notification or not.
Realistically, 1710 is a frequency probably checked far more frequently by hobbyists compared to the general public.So why not go up 10 Kc ?
MW pirate hobbyists usually have more serious gear and would probably SDR see or just try to analog tune 1720 .
IF CRN reads this, why not consider going clear on 1720 (at least sometimes ) ,if possible ?.

I still hear it from time to time, weaker than before, and almost always running the same "we're broken" test tape.

The general rationale I hear from some ops for running on 1710 is as you described, the hope that the general public will tune in.
The general public will NOT tune in.
The general public doesn't listen to radio much anymore. Barely listens to AM radio, which is why so many AM stations are closing. Pirate radio on AM? You've got to be kidding me ;D
IMHO: Ops who run on 1710 (or 1620) are trading better reception / non-interference with BC/TIS stations for the illusion of getting the general public listening in.
The only realistic audience for MW pirates are other radio hobbyists. That means 1720 kHz. Or 1730 if you prefer :)
(Yes, I am sure there's an op somewhere out there who will say they run on 1620 or 1710 or whatever and their neighbor down the road listens, or something like that. But let's be serious.)

You finally came right out and said what I was trying to dance around: 1710 is pretty much a dead end.
1710 “ list” :
WQFG 689/ TIS ‘o doom,
KHMV LP / pt 15 (whatever THAT means 😜) and pirate(s).
1620 seems quite clear in NE part of the US. Only WNRP FL / 1 Kw night Omni.
BUT: If it were me and I was SERIOUS, I would personally prefer to stay off an occupied frequency- no matter how far away or wimpy the licensed (or non licensed station is) .This includes 1710 or 1620.
I would definitely go 1720 or 30, which as far as I can find have NO regular ops in the US .
( or a million times better-Use 6955U ! )
Not everyone can ( or will) go 1720/30.
I guess that’s just the way it goes.
All this makes me want to put my Super
Flea back on 1720.It’s ridiculously FAR , FAR below Pt. 15 standards.
I can yell further.
But it still might be fun to actually emit some RF from this QTH ( which hasn’t happened for a VERY long time) and have MY music on the antiques or crystal sets
I will leave the serious stuff to others ( been there / done that ).
