Title: Korean Coastal Station HLO 16989 kHz morse error
Post by: FFZ on March 27, 2014, 1511 UTC
Has anyone noticed that when this automated beacon IDs, it sends HLO HLO SLO.  Sounds like their message has an error!  I've listened to it quite a bit lately and wasn't sure if QSB was causing me to miss a dit, but now I'm certain it's an error in their message.  Have a listen on 16989 kHz; the "wheel" sends "CQ CQ CQ DE HLO HLO SLO QSX 16MHZ K".  I'll post audio later on....

Hi,
I've been on 8484(U) since 15:00UTC - twenty minutes now - and there is a signal that sounds like extremely s-l-o-w morse. Any ideas what that could be. Interesting though not terribly exciting!!!!

Many thanks for the info. I'm just getting back into shortwave after a 33 year break!! There are a lot of interesting things out there that I didn't tune into back in the early '80s. Is this very slow morse normal for them? Cheers...

I made a ten minute recording of the signal I was listening to on 8484(U), to try and decipher it. The length of each tone varies between approx 1 second up to approx 11 seconds, most being 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 seconds.

Here is a part of it (hopefully the tone lengths are accurate!!):
2,2,3,2,2,3,3,3,1,3,2,2,2,1,4,3,1,1,3,1,5,1,7,3,2,3,2,5,2,6,3,4,2,4,4,4,6,3,2,2,1,3,2,1,1,2,1,1,3,3,5,4,7,4,4,3,4,6,2,2,3,6,6,2,2,5,5,2,2,1,3,2,8,5,3,1,3,4,4,1,3,4,6,2,3,1,3,6,7,4,2,2,4,2,2,6,1,2,6,6,2,3,4,4,8,3,2,2,1,8,4,1,11,1,3,6,6,2,4,3,3,5,2,5,2,5,3,3,3,2,1,5,4,2,1,7,3,1,4,6,1,3

Any explanation of the the length of the tones would be very much appreciated....
