**Special News**************************************************
Congressman Peter King (New York 2nd Dist.) wrote a letter to FCC chairman Thomas Wheeler berating the ongoing pirate radio activity in New York city. As a member of the homeland security committee he puts an onimus spin on free radio and its broadcasters. He concludes by asking the chairman to allocate more resources to the New York office to “remedy the illegal pirate radio problem in New York.”

The pirate 'problem' in NYC is the obvious result of the FCC having too much money!
It should be obvious to any winger that it can *only* be solved by cutting the FCC's budget!
(What is King, some kind of socialist?!)
-
Mr. King,
To quote Bugs Bunny, "What a Maroon..."
Sincerely,
...whatever...
-
Actually, Peter King is a Republican who has announced that he will be running for President in 2016! It's a scary world out there Pete...bigger fish to fry than the illegal immigrants running 10 watts on FM for the local communities in the Big Apple....
-
King is a NOBODY at best... and will soon be an also ran...
The scary part to this is what is really being said is that DHS wants a power grab from the FCC over enforcement...
The DHS wants in to every pie they can stick their fingers in. One of the reasons (FEMA included) why I don't involve myself in the MARS program any more... if the truth were known...

Problem my ass.. NYC is a breeding ground of art and people who really truly exhibit the meaning of the freedom of speech. Pirate radio has always been a part of the culture in NYC, and to quote one of my favorite quotes of all time..
"As long as there is radio, there will be pirates on the radio"
Get over yourselves FCC, the pirates will always be on the radio, because its our god damn airwaves, not yours!!! So go back to making commercial radio shittier and shittier, and ruining the use of FM and MW radio, and let the pirates be!!
ANARCHY!!! ANARCHY!!!!
.........later, a-train goes to a health care ward.......

And I quote: " So go back to making commercial radio shittier and shittier, and ruining the use of FM and MW radio, and let the pirates be!!"
Good point but I feel a little let down when Pirates play the same old commercial.... errr scat. There is a ton of good music out there so there is no excuse for playing 'oldies' (aka 60's -80's bs) let's be a little original and play some indy stuff... you know, the stuff that doesn't get played on commercial 'oldies' stations or current top 20 stations...
Hey I'm a burned out old hippie and I know all the oldies by heart... let's hear something that has never been heard before... or is the music business totally as dead as it seems...???
I don't want to offend anyone but... let's get real, pirate means to play something that no one else is playing right??? Seems the current crop of pirates play the same old same old...(AKA SOS) IMHO
sorry if I have offended anyone...

I understand your point, but I think you misunderstand the motivations behind pirate broadcasting. It's true that they play a lot of "oldies", but for some pirates this is out of frustration with commercial radio's insistence on playing music from just a small number of groups. There is a lot of "old" music that just never gets played, and there are a lot of groups that came and went without cracking the top 100. I think pirate radio does try to address this.
Indy music is just fine, but if it doesn't suit the pirate, then it doesn't get played. That's their privilege, as pirating entails a lot of work and a certain amount of danger. If you want to hear Indy music, then fire up your transmitter and have at it. I guarantee that you will attract listeners, and maybe you can strike a blow towards broadcasting Indy music.
Of course, pirating is ILLEGAL I would advise against it.Not to mention that pirates are a pretty
scruffy group, overall.

I know what you're saying Vince, I guess I've felt that way sometimes myself. Personally, I don't care so much about the music selection, but moreso about the lack of creativity lately. Back in the 80s and early 90s when Harry P. Ness and I were producing Radio Garbanzo we were both completely committed to the project and would invest a minimum of 50 hours in the writing and production of each show. Life has gotten too busy for me to do that now. I rely much more on music for WAZU programming than I once did in the RG days. And I can certainly understand that same motivation with others. That's why I get such a woodie when hearing a truly creative pirate such as Undercover Radio or Radio Free Euphoria. If you ask ten pirates why they do it you will probably get at least five different answers. And I think those answers tend to change with changing circumstances... at least mine has. Everything runs in cycles and I would imagine that pirate radio will "get good" again eventually, as motivations change. And Mr. Fansome is correct, as usual. We ARE a rather scruffy bunch - with GREAT music collections!

Lol, agree with you. My playlist consisted of Hour of Slack, Puzzling Evidence & anything else I can scrape off my vinyl collection. That was on FM. Now, with an HF setup, I'm debating..<g>
