Title: The HF Underground Wiki
Post by: ChrisSmolinski on July 05, 2014, 0020 UTC
This may be the best kept secret of the HFU, but we have a wiki. In the past, it's been somewhat difficult to use, as it had a separate account system. Now, it uses the HFU message board account system, so you can log in with your HFU user name and password.  The wiki is for creating content for virtually anything radio related. Operators can create a page about their station. Listeners can post QSL card images. There's also articles about various SWBC and utility stations, receivers, software, and assorted technical topics. If it's somehow related to radio, it's welcome on the wiki.

You can access the wiki here: http://www.hfunderground.com/wiki/Main_Page

If you have not created content on a wiki before, you may wish to read up on media wiki editing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing and https://help.wikispaces.com/Editing+a+Page have some basic information.

If you have questions, feel free to ask, either here or on IRC.

Thanks Chris! It seemed a formidable task to edit the Wiki, so the link to the Wiki editing is especially appreciated.  :)

Here's some basic information about editing or creating a page on the Wiki:

First, go to the wiki's main page and log in by clicking "log in" in the upper right corner: http://www.hfunderground.com/wiki/Main_Page

If you want to edit an existing page, go to that page, and click "edit" up near the top. Make your changes, then click Save Page down near the bottom.

If you want to create a new page, type the name of the page in the search box and click Go. The page won't be found, and you'll get a page with a link like this:
"Create the page "page name" on this wiki!"  Click on the link and you will be taken to the edit window for that page, the contents will be blank.

These two links have some good basic info on editing wiki pages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing and https://help.wikispaces.com/Editing+a+Page

I often look at existing pages to figure out how to do what I want. Find a wiki page (it doesn't have to be on the HFU wiki, it can be on any wiki) and click Edit to see the source for the page. Then I see how
they're doing the formatting I want, and follow that as a template, copying and pasting as necessary.

You can then click Show preview to see what the page will look like, or Save page to save your changes.

Be sure to add lots links to other pages in the HFU wiki, as appropriate. That's the power of a wiki. Also consider adding a  category markup if the page fits an existing category. For example, if the page is about a pirate radio station, adding:
Quote
[[Category:Pirate radio stations]]

to the bottom of the page will automatically add a link to the page from the list of pirate radio stations here: http://www.hfunderground.com/wiki/Category:Pirate_radio_stations (this page itself never needs to be edited, any page with the category link will appear).

If you want to add an image, click the Upload file link on the left side of any wiki page. Click the Choose file button, then select the image file from your hard drive. You can generally ignore any of the other fields, and click the upload file button at the bottom of the page. The image will be uploaded, and you'll be taken to the image's wiki page, where you can see it. The name of the image is at the top of the page after "File:". Copy or remember this.

To add the image to a wiki page, go to that page and edit it. Add this text to the page source, where you want the image to appear. If the image was named NetSDR.jpg you would add:
Quote
[[Image:NetSDR.jpg]]

Preview and then save your wiki page, you should see your added image.

You used to be asked a trivial radio related question, this is to keep out spammers. I think we've pretty much blocked them now anyway, so this extra step can was eliminated, hopefully the spammers will still be blocked.

Thanks for mentioning this! I tried to log in several times with my old wiki password. Got in fine with my board password.

If you have questions, feel free to ask, either here or on IRC.

I think the main page should be overhauled. Maybe a starting point would be to create broad categories, then list some key pages within those categories. Example categories could be commercial broadcasting, amateur, pirate, numbers/clandestine, utility/beacon, logging, receivers, software, people.

Also here's a page that looks like it can be removed: http://www.hfunderground.com/wiki/PD-old

Could you add a link to the wiki on the menu at the top of the page?
This one:
Home    Help    Search    Profile    My Messages    Members    Logout

There's links to the Wiki in the upper right part of the window. Let me see if I can add a link to the area you mentioned, it is certainly more prominent.

OK, I think I have it working, there's now a menu called HFU Special Sites, the wiki as well as several other sites appear there. How's that?

Anyone with an HFU account can edit the Wiki. We look forward to your contributions  ;D

Perfect, many thanks. I found the other link in the corner after you pointed it out. It was kind of hard to see with these old eyes.

Why can’t I log in? I tried with my HFunderground board password and username but it says the password is wrong.

Most likely either the user name or password was entered incorrectly, or you have a space in your username, which does not work for Wiki logins.

Does the _ count as a space? I am sure they are entered correctly.

I *think* that is fine, it's been a while. It's a bit of a hack using the forum accounts for Wiki access  :)
