Last night I went into the shack to shut down the radios
and to my delight on 5800 Khz tone modulated code in the form of "cut numbers".
Time was 0606Utc I sat there and copied the 5 letter groups which ended
0613Utc with AR AR
Then WDWUN WDWUN WDWUN BT then the text body....
I'm assuming that WDWUN is the agent the message was meant for????

I can verify. Here Central California Coast I have:
M8a 5900 KHz In progress 0515-0530 Sat Jan.2 UTC
Five letter groups Solid Signal ends with AR AR AR SK
M8a 5800 KHz 0600-0630 Sat. Jan.2 UTC Five letter Groups
Solid with slight noise and fade ends with AR AR AR SK
Both transmissions sounded like the same prerecorded message to me. Could be
wrong on that.
I Still get a little confused on the UTC. Was Friday evening PST.

Here San Luis Obispo, California I Have:
M8a 5900 KHz 0515- 0535 Jan. 6 UTC (Wed. Evening PST)
Fair Signal with high pitched ringing sound Xmtr Fault? No
other carrior present.
Also: M8a 5800 KHz 0600-0633 Jan. 6 UTC
Good Signal through moderate noise and deep fade. Pure
Tone Modulated Note.
Evidently, Can be found throughout the week.
-
M8a also on 5810 Khz
These transmissions seem to be more prevalent.
Here San Luis Obispo, California:
M8a 5810 Khz 0600-0633 Jan. 31 UTC
Good signal through slight: noise, turbulence and occasional
selective fade.
The Three Recipients were:
GWUAA (#85411)
IARIN (#71672)
GTGTA (#80801)
I would expect another repeat transmission nearby. Also these
would be several times throughout the week.
Cheers

Here San Luis Obispo, California 'The California Ozarks' (More of a state of
mind, than a geographical location) I Have:
M8a 5900Khz 0500-0532 Feb. 4 UTC
The three recipients were:
WNDNN (#52322)
UUANN (#44122)
GDTTN (#83002)
Repeat transmission:
0558-0632 UTC on 5800Khz
Please see the Enigma and external links sections on the Main Page.
Wealth of information if you happen to be new to this like I am. (lots
of frequencies...)

until 0635UT (2-14) than empty carrier....

2-15 on from 0600 to 0635UT with carrier off at 0649...

It's been awhile since I have listened to this, so my information may not be current. Profile says your in NW USA, I'm in San Luis Obispo, California. You may want to try: 5900 Khz at 05:00 UTC. The 5800 Khz transmission at 06:00 UTC at least was in the past the repeat transmission from 05:00 UTC. Also try: 5810 Khz at 06:00 UTC; I don't know the repeat/parallel Transmission.
Again, navigate around on the Homepage for the Enigma Newsletter for more good info. I have only heard SK01 one time. The more observations from around the Country, the better. TNX VY 73 ..

The Cuban stations, V2, M8, and SK01, are day of the week specific. That means each day might have a different station on a different frequency at any specific time, such as 0500. The 0500 time slot is one of the more stable. The last data I have lists for the 0500 slot (days and times are UTC, list includes possibles and backups):
Monday 5898
Tuesday 12180/13380/5898
Wednesday 12180/13380/5898
Thursday 13380/5898
Friday 12180/13380/5898
Saturday 5898
Sunday 5898
You'll note 5898 listed every day, however several of those are "possible", not 100% of the time.

Active agn @0600 2-19

How sure are you of that 5900 kHz? I have not seen 5900 in use for a while, and right this minute (0505 UTC) M8a is up on 5898, the frequency I have seen V2a, M8a, and SK01 up on recently.

Last night it was (2-22UT) 5900kHz 5F groups from 0500 to 0535 then a carrier to 0550.. 5800kHz 0600 5FG. Listening in AM mode with signal tuned to 5900 & 5800kHz. The Spooks Newsletter website lists it as 5898kHz?
-
For sure for the 0500 UTC, 22 Feb 2011 transmission the frequency was 5898 kHz and not 5900 kHz. There was a carrier up on 5900 (as there often is) that was associated with a broadcast station.
With a receiver in the AM mode it is possible, especially with a strong signal, for you to be one or two kHz off and still seem to be tuned correctly. This is particularly true when there is a close carrier.
There is a technique of switching to SSB and back and forth between USB and LSB that can be used to zero beat the carrier, and give you the true frequency. Alternately, if you switch to either SSB mode (assuming fixed SSB detectors and not a BFO) and the audio stays the same you are correctly tuned.

What sounded like so called "SK01" on 5898.0kHz at 0600 (2-23), no MCW heard...
-
Isn't this interesting. Reply #1 I list M8a on 5900 Khz Sat Jan. 2 2010. I'm using (still) compact portable RCVR with stepped tuning- anything is possible with this RCVR. I'm pressed for time, preliminary search has not shown 5900 Khz as the exact frequency for M8a during this period; but I do see: 5898 Khz...yes my passband is wide. At any rate, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
Cheers. TNX VY 73 ..

The question is why is this stuff not being sent QLF to defeat any automated gathering techniques?
-
QLF? How would sending with your left foot defeat gathering techniques? Better yet, OTPs are secure enough when properly used why worry about gathering techniques? Let listeners, hobby folk, professionals, and anything in between gather all they want, what good will it do them other than as a curiosity?
