A license for the call letters WKRP has been issued.

Without any doubt, my favorite radio-related sitcom of all time.

The first turkey I ever shot was flying. I spooked a flock walking along a narrow ridge while heading home from a day of squirrel hunting when I was eleven. Except for having to spit the occasional piece of shot, that gobbler was better than any store bought bird I ever tasted.

I had the Jimbo and Ned excuse working for me that day, it was coming right at me.

Yes they CAN fly - but not very well.  When I was still driving short haul for a living I hit one flying low and slow about 8 feet off the ground.  Me going 60, bird flying perpendicular to me.  I could see the whole thing coming but couldn't avoid hitting that bird - right smack dab in the windshield on the passenger side.  Just like hitting a bowling ball.  Took out the whole windshield - thank God for safety glass.  Once I got the truck stopped on the shoulder I must've been at least 10 minutes just catching my breath and picking glass chunklets before I picked up the phone.  I thought the boss would be pissed, but he acted kinda incredulous about the whole thing...

When the State of Maine re-introduced turkeys to the wild many windshields were taken out but the low flying birds.  Wild turkeys can fly but the type that are raised, the white ones, cannot.

My lawn at the QTH in Maine often had a large flock of the wild turkeys on it in the morning.  They would get a good run on my lawn, run across the road, and launch themselves into the pine tree branches about 20 feet in the air.

I never cared much for the birds because they would to the doodoo on the lawn and my girls would complain about the mess.  I also had large groups of Deer come down on the lawn in the very early morning but their doodoo isn't wet and messy  ::)

A morning surprise Vince ;D

I have a similar animal circus here, but thankfully it takes place in the field above the house.  My fenced-in backyard is the spaniel's toilet.  Although occasionally a deer will hop in and hop out, leaving some Cocoa Puffs.  I've never had a turkey in there though.  They just aren't enthusiastic flyers.  In fact, I've never really understood what actually makes them take flight.  Generally they will run away from danger and they are FAST.  They seem to be gaining in number even with all the coyotes that the stupid NYS Dept. of Constipation re-introduced over the last decade.

Well ff....

Maine didn't realize that the fast population growth of the turkeys would cause the lower buds on sapping trees and bushes to be eaten up by the Turkeys and the Deer herd would suffer greatly because of the turkeys...

Me being me...  I'd find a dead Deer or two in the early spring and I'd dig a hole to bury them... kinda sorta put me off turkeys...
