Title: Pioneering Guitarist Lonnie Mack Dead at 74
Post by: Oliver on April 22, 2016, 1937 UTC
Guitarist and vocalist Lonnie Mack, known as one of rock’s first true guitar heroes—and a major influence on Stevie Ray Vaughan—died Thursday, April 21, of natural causes at Centennial Medical Center near his home in Smithville, Tennessee. He was 74.

His early instrumental recordings—including "Wham!" and "Memphis"—influenced many of rock's greatest players, including Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, Keith Richards and Jimmy Page.

I witnessed Stevie Ray Vaughn's sound man sabotage Lonnie Mack's set at a concert in the late 80's. Lonnie was ripping it up when the sound suddenly went to Hell mid-set. A fist fight nearly broke out between the two crews. You can't have the opening act making the strung out headliner look bad.

One of the greats. I remember seeing him in person when I was dating my soon to be wife back in the 60's. Of course he did Memphis.
He will be missed.
