Interesting read, thanks for posting!

Just one more example of how awesome Feynman was.

Maybe this is why what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
Thanks, Chris!

I knew a fella who used to put tape decks in microwaves to record "ghost voices" in a shielded environment. It sounded the same as the tapes he made outside the microwave, like noise.
I liked the comments from the fanboys trying to cover Feynman's ass on this one. "He solved the problem correctly, but the problem was incorrect." Uh-huh. If the guy was such a "god", wouldn't he have realized the problem was wrong in the first place? His thinking may have been more focused had he stuck that drum on his head, instead of looking like Larry Fine in a remake of "The Mambo Kings".
That's why we never let the hard science guys run at large on the rest of campus. They try to apply their goofiness to more important fields, like Phys. Ed and Sports Management. They should send those science guys to the local tech school to learn something useful, like refrigerator repair.

O .K. Didn't think I'd make A N Y comment until reading the "posting/comments", my conclusion is you'll have to pry my microwave oven from my cold, blue hands! Oh yeah, as long as I can see the bubbles just startin' up in my morning cup of coffee, go ahead, design the door's holes any ol' which-way.

Do you have to check the wheels on the carousel in a microwave for proper tire pressure? Fansome was a pupil of Feynman's, he should know.

Just thought of this, I wonder if skin effect is partially responsible for the lack of shielding by skinny conductors. Following this logic, you may be able to get away with chicken wire at MW frequencies, but not above 50 MHz or so.
Just a thought...

I knew a guy who worked as engineer for a real cheapskate station owner. The buried groundplane for one the MW's was made out of rolls light gauge fence wire spot welded together and buried about 18 inches down. It worked great for a few years. My friend died in the interim and they've got no one to to maintain it. It's got about half of it's former range these days. It used to blast at my house, now it's barely there.
