Just saw this and thought it a novel approach to suiting the antenna to day/nite conditions;
MW-antenna directional during the nighttime, omnidirectional in the daytime

The LDR (TruOpto GL5528 Light Dependent Photoresistor) referred to is our old friend, the CdS cell.
