Why does R. Cairo frequently sound either severely under modulated or like something else is sitting on top of them?

That's S7 swinging around a bit. I hear R.Cairo like this often and thought this would be the place to ask.

Same thing happening at the moment 0116utc 9Jan2011. Though, it doesn't sound like Cairo under there at the moment. Sounds like religious broadcast of some sort.

That's typical for Radio Cairo. For as long as I've heard them, on any frequency and time, they've tended to have a strong carrier and under-modulated, muffled audio.
I don't see any other station on the sked for that freq and time, but it's not unusual for other-than-programmed sideband comms to be audible through an under-modulated strong carrier. I've heard this several times, especially on 40m where U.S. hams compete with international broadcasters. It's not unusual for a U.S. ham on LSB to be audible and intelligible when the receiver is in AM mode and tuned to an international broadcast station. Helps if the broadcaster has a strong carrier and low modulation.

Yep. It was lil' trick pirates used to employ when they were in that 7350-7450 range. Ride the dead carrier in sideband the international broadcaster was kicking out before or after sign off.
I remember a couple of guys jumping WBCQ's dead carrier when 'BCQ first started broadcasting on 7415. Someone in Monticello must have dozed off and forgot to shut the transmitter off? The pirates were on for nearly two hours having fun and joking about it.
I want to say it was Voice of The Ozarks, but it's been so long I can't remember.

Yeah, I remember a station, I think KUSA (the one from about 20 years ago, not today's version) riding VOA's 7415-kHz carrier for about 20 min. Makes for a nice AM (essentially) signal and I'd guess that it's tougher to DF, too.

I can imagine during the Revolution....
Aide: Should we pull Radio Cairo off the air?
Mubarak: Why? No one can understand them anyway?
*both laugh* :D
Peace!
