The last month or so with "bad propagation" for my listing has been strong RFI. Still there. Traced it out today and it follows the powerline from my house underground along the fence and into the neighbor's yard. I sent a real nice message to the power company asking them to look into their mess and fix it. If they refuse... then I'll see how dedicated the FCC is to "AM Revitalization."
>:(
When I moved to the house in 2001, I had my ICF-2010 and it was quiet across everywhere, LF-HF. It was glorious. Used that same 2010 a short time ago outside and its a complete disaster.
-
Good luck, I hope they can address it (and don't say it is generated by your neighbor and not their problem).
-
There are around 5 (last I counted) distinct RFI sources and 4 are from the neighbors. Those aren't the power company's problem. The only thing the power company could do is cut power to those houses. I would be in favor of that, but that's not realistic. However, there is a new source that is far stronger than all of the rest and that runs along the underground the power lines and seems to be strongest in MW but splatters across MW through HF- that is what I want them to investigate & fix.
And if they tell me "That's PLC! Tough." Then I will pull out my authorization to work the two new shiny amateur bands verifying no PLC within range. I have no idea how my power company deals with RFI, this is first time I've contacted them.
I sent a nice email with some detail. They can be professional & responsible to address it amicably or I will make a federal case out of it. After all, their slogan is "responsible by nature." They will need to live up to it.
If this is some device gone bad, its well within their interest to fix it, not just for regulation reasons, but because this is probably costing them money on wasted power.
I long for 2001.... quiet as mouse here. So very, very quiet.
-
Yes, thinking back, it was amazingly quiet way back when. I am thinking to the late 70s, when the major QRM sources were light dimmers and TV horizontal sweep.
OTOH, we didn't have SDRs and computers, so I don't long for the good old days too much.
