Title: Thai Buddhist monks' health suffering from sugary drinks
Post by: ChrisSmolinski on November 05, 2019, 2009 UTC
Some interesting points. The monks eat a low calorie diet (just 1350) yet 48% are obese. But they consume a lot of sugar especially via soda. Which does support the idea that total calories are less (possibly far less) important than the macronutrient composition of the food.

For the general public (I doubt the monks in question have a calorie tracking app on their iPhone) calories may be a oversimplification that almost encourages poor dietary choices, since you can trade high quality foods for those of poor quality, yet on paper appear to be doing fine.

If they're drinking diet soda that would splain a lot of the obesity.
