Can I safely connect a portable (SONY ICF SW 7600 GR) to a yard pole antenna? I notice there is a "Line Out" port on the side. I'm aware a shelf-style receiver is the really good way to go here, and yup, I'm totally clueless!

why not, its a input for a external antenna.. :)

I am not familiar with that radio, but "Line out" is usually For a recorder or speaker. You want "EXT antenna. "

No ground wire to the gas pipe, I see! lol. They say to use the supplied external antenna , but they did not supply one, and I have a clip-on...DOES have the AM EXT Antenna port, thanx.

yes indeed its the upper one he can use it indeed.. there is no harm if he uses the wrong connector hole... do not think the antenne will resonate that much to use it as a line out. ;)
