Title: Cuban spy numbers
Post by: swl22 on January 30, 2022, 1709 UTC
Very active today on 11435 and 11530 at 1645-1710, with some noises in between strings. Probably a digital type marker,

The "noise" is a digital mode called DIGTRX. It's sending files in encrypted text.

Fabulous software actually. Too bad it is no longer maintained. The mode is robust.

Small nit here.

The mode is called RDFT (Redundant Digital File Transfer), the most common software used by hobbyist to demodulate that mode is DIGTRX.  The RDFT mode was developed as a ham radio mode around 2001, and started being used by HM01 in about 2012.  Prior to HM01, the Cubans used the same RDFT (and a couple other modes, also) with HM01's predecessor signal, SK01, starting in about 2007.

There have been a couple of different beta and experimental softwares that could work with RDFT, but DIGTRX is by far the most common, and the only one that I know of that has a chance of running on a reasonably recent OS.

New groups today after being in repeat mode since 9/23/21.
Is something pending or just RHC being RHC?

Cuba has been a long ally of Russia and it has long been suggested that the stations are also used by Russia. Some appeared in wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Speculate all you want.

I always welcome picking of my nits. Thanks Token.

You never really know with HM01. Either they do what they do in order to waste the time of government monitors, or it's the most inept numbers station in the history of numbers stations.

From what I can tell, the Russians have enough of their own systems not to need anything of the Cubans and their unreliable station. Even the Spanish Lady station (V07) seems to cover Latin America well enough. But it's all speculation as you say.
