Title: AFN on shortwave still exist?
Post by: staticlistener on February 02, 2022, 0044 UTC
Last time i heard them was back when Key West was still on the air, but i can't find any reference to the other remaining sites (Guam/Diego Garcia) being shut down, at the same time i can't find anything recent proving that anyone has heard them recently either

I think it may be sporadic, when like a major deployment takes place, they'd do the stuporbowl or similar, but otherwise they use innernets and sat.

Wiki suggests the Navy still does (occasional?) AFN shortwave broadcasts.

I have not heard AFN on HF in a long time. AFAIK, several years now.

Moving down the bands, AFN does a mediumwave broadcast from Cuba on 1340AM. I have no real idea regarding power. Probably not much since it is supposed to be for the naval base.

AFN is mostly distributed via C band satellite.  With changes coming to C band, that may change.

Retired military can get a decoder key, but you have to live outside the US.

There is an Internet broadcast called AFN 360, but they take steps to ensure you are outside the US.

I have heard AFN on FM in Sicily and posted about 4 years ago, I believe the frequency/station still active:
