Title: Part 15 Station in N CA - 1710 AM Who is it?
Post by: Barycenter on October 18, 2022, 0305 UTC
Was listening online with KiwiSDR: Software-defined receiver in northern California USA KR6LA and I'm hearing what seems to be a Part 15 AM station broadcasting on 1710 khz. I've searched online and in Part 15 databases but don't see anything close to this location other than a Hispanic Part 15 just south of Reno, NV.  I checked the live stream and they were different (the CA station was playing Linda Ronstadt)

Anyone have ideas what station that might be? Maybe a resort of some type?  This would be near Redding, CA.

Redding is a long way inland to be hearing a Part-15 station in Half Moon Bay.

Agreed - Half Moon Bay seems too far - I think I'll reach out to KR6LA and see if they know.  It's odd to me that Part 15 AM broadcasters choose 1710 khz - the FCC restrictions are much higher for > 1705 khz than the std MW frequency range.

Obviously neither of you actually read everything in the thread I linked. KHMB’s AM transmitter is not actually a legal part 15, although it claims to be. The fact it is on 1710 and it has several miles of coverage during the day (and can be heard long distance at night, as you observed), immediately demonstrates it is not a part 15 station. Please read everything in the thread I linked before you say I’m wrong.

Sorry - yes, I did read it earlier. I wasn't disagreeing at all and didn't say you were wrong. Just was stating my reaction to stations in general on 1710 khz who claim to be Part 15 compliant as some do (I have no idea what KHMB claims). I do think looking at the distance (~250 miles) at bit more, the SDR was picking up Half Moon Bay at that time of night.
