Been hearing a Spanish speaking station on this frequency lately in the pre-dawn hours
mixing with WLS. An OM and YL chatting back and forth, never any music.
Mexican?, Cuban?, any ideas... ???

WYAM 890 am ? Spanish programming out of Huntsville, Alabama.
2.5 KW , days only is a possibility:

There are a few options to look at here:

OK, pretty sure the mystery is solved...
Had been hearing this in the car with no way to peak or null the signal
to aid in identifying it. However, this morning had some time to play with
the CCrane 2E and was able to peak the Spanish speaking station in the null of WLS.
This led me to assume the station was Cuban as the sigs peaked in that direction.
The OTA program matched the online Radio Progreso
(they were playing some music this morning so that helped with the ID), so most likely it is AM 890
Chambas Cuba at 200kw power output.

I heard something similar early this morning, around 3 AM my time. Was able to pick out (from the transmission) that it was indeed a Cuban station on 890. If this was Progreso...well, whatever it was, it was blowing WLS out of the water.

200,000 watts? That's a hell of a lot of power....?

The Cuban completely covers WLS some mornings.

Same here, they start blasting in here about 11 p.m. and go all night when conditions are right. They've got to let the refugees know what they left behind in the Worker's Paradise.
On nights when they go long, it's a good sign stations further south in the islands and northern S. America will pop up. Jamaica has about 5 MW stations that come up out of the noise when the Cuban's go long. They play good music.
