153 khz audio too faint to make anything out but definite male talking in unknown languageat 6:31 utc
162 utc at 5:30 utc v faint talking then at 6:35 - 6:40 utc much better audio, male and female announcers talking in French, bits of music at times.
198 khz at 6:33 - 6:35 utc v faint male and female speech, no idea what language, still v faintly hear a woman and man talking at 7:05 - 7:08 utc.
Interesting, while I've heard others mention stations in this band I never before been able to hear them for myself... Great night for long wave!!!

There is usually only 3 or 4 nights per year that I can hear those.

Listeners in NA might want to give LW a try tonight. I am currently listening to music and talk on what sounds like Radio Romania (Antena Satelor) on 153KHz. It is not far above the noise floor, but it is there.

Add 171KHz as well. Sounds Russian. I am thinking probably Radio Rossii.

This is great news. I hope conditions are similar today, as I have yet to receive a broadcast station on LW in all my days. I am in Arizona, if I can get anything I will post here later.

Getting that noise floor as low as possible is the key. Amongst many other things, but that is always first on my list.

A low noise floor is a near requirement for transatlantic longwave listening. My "shielded" loop made from 148' of RG-6 rests horizontally on the groound. It has massive ground losses, but it also tends to help with noise. Most of my longwave listening is done via S1 or less signals, which usually put those stations right above my local noise floor. I also use the loop-on-ground up to well above 15MHz with decent results, thought usually with a 20dB preamp at such higher frequencies.
Before the loop, I was using a simple unterminated beverage-on-ground antenna built from RG-6 for my low-frequency antenna. Positive to the center conductor, which was shorted to the far end to the shield. Negative to just a ground rod. Horrid losses, but again, very low noise. If I had the space, I would deploy a true terminated beverage at several hundreds of feet in length, aimed towards Europe.

Have a broadcast station on 153KHz at 0326UTC on 5-20-2014. It is almost in the noise floor, plus there are some atmospherics, so ID is difficult. Perhaps Radio Romania.

Could be, but more likely Deutschlandfunk from Germany.
