12/16/09, 6925.1 USB
1900z approx: Outhouse Radio ID, Eric Clapton "Bad Love", STP "Dead and Bloated"
Outhouse Radio ID's 1905z and 1916z, Iron Butterfly "Inna-blah-blah-blah", Eagles, other music.
CW also occasionally audible, not sure if from Outhouse, other op or utility station.
1948z: Something in "Cylon Centurion" style robot voice, couldn't quite copy here.
1950z: Outhouse ID, C&W song, sounds like "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show"
SINPO - 24322, the usual recent propagation pattern, some decent signal peaks, lots of fades into noise. Peak here was between 1910-1930z.

why not just listen to FM?
-
what? And miss the staticky, crashy, ear-bending goodness that is shortwave dx?
:)
-
2103z: Steely Dan "FM"
2107z: SSTV, no copy here.
I think Dr. Benway tried FM on 6925 a couple of times. The FCC gets all cornfoosed about this stuff.

What the hell is "FM"?
-
FM. I think it stands for Free Music. ;) what do you think?
Actually it is a type of broadcasting that uses frequency modulation (FM) to provide high-fidelity sound over broadcast radio. Meaning, you don't have to worry about poor receptions. You actually get to listen to music or broadcast in loud and clear sounds. Or even Youtube have some pirate radio broadcasts that actually sounded good.
Who is Dr. Benway? Why did FCC get all cornfoosed? ???
-
This is a SW specific board. Why are you here? ???
Peace!

Meaning there is no DX.
Give me SSB or give me death.

I feel like that I may be missing out on something really cool. That is why I am trying to understand what this is.

Fair enough. Pirates broadcast all kinds of stuff, ranging from original material to familiar music to relays of other stations to odd mashups that defy description. Sometimes it's just air checks to test propagation conditions, wring the bugs out of equipment, tweak audio levels, etc. So you'll hear a variety of stuff.
Part of the allure of shortwave pirate radio is the radio hobby itself. DXing is like fishing, while listening to local FM radio is like buying fish at the corner grocery store. Right now propagation is very erratic so you never know what you'll hear. Signals that skip over us nearby might be heard halfway around the world.
Stick around for the fun. Read the HFU wiki (http://www.hfunderground.com/), attached to this site, plus the older columns on the FRN (http://www.frn.net/) and other sites about the pirate scene written by veterans like John Cruzan, Pat Murphy, George Zeller, Andrew Yoder and others. Plenty of background info.
Good camaraderie too, among fellow geeks and geekettes.

Another good info link is AlfaLima: http://www.alfalima.net

Thank you! I will check into that.

BESIDES, TO ME IT"S RADIATION THERAPY
That's because you're standing too close to your transmitter. :D
@Leah: I would also recommend the book "Radio Monitoring: The How-to Guide" by T.J. Arey. It is a superb introduction to the hobby and covers a lot of info in an easy-to-read format with lots of pictures and diagrams. Can be found in most major bookstores and easily online. I can almost guarantee you'll be DXing and rooting out pirate signals before you get to page 30. In the meantime, consult the DXing entry on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DXing).
Grab your AM (we refer to it as MW - medium wave - around here) radio and tune through the band after sunset. Ignore your local stations; listen to the faint ones and you'll hear something from far away, then you'll be hooked.
-
Thank you Lima. I think I am already hooked.
Thank you guys for all the info.
Outhouse, Really sorry about your friend. :'( Hope 2010 will be a great one for you.
