Title: AC power supply noise, remedy?
Post by: flexoman61 on June 30, 2015, 1727 UTC
Always  fighting the noise!

Want to try to combat any noise I may be
getting from my household AC power
supply.

Is there any kind of AC power supply filter
I can use to avoid noise I may be getting from everything
in the house that is plug into household power supply?

We have the usual computers, HD TV's, Fridge etc.
Tried the usual checks, unplug this and that in the house for
any dramatic change in receiver noise. No one thing
contributes any significant noise to the receiver.
But with all the necessary things running off main AC
in the house, I'm sure my receiver is picking up some
noise from it all.
The receiver is capable of running off DC, but a huge hassle.

My receiver- Kenwood R-2000
100' longwire antenna
9:1 balun, 30' RG-58/u coax feed
8' ground rod
Coax shield grounded 1' from ground rod
lighting arrestor grounded 1' from ground rod
Radio grounded (not sure this is necessary).

Thanks for any help, Don W.

Hello flexoman61,
there is a wide range of power supply noise filters on the market.

Take a look at the link,
http://www.tdk-lambda.com/products/sps/nf/bodye.html
These filters are available for $15 to $70 on the internet.

You can also find some more details to the topic of noise filtering in the below article.

I Hope this helps you to tackle your noise issues.

The old tried-and-true method is to kill the main to the house, or all the breakers and see if you get a noticeable drop in noise level.

I guess we all look at things differently Don.  I run my receivers from gel cells.  I have several of the 7 aH batts and rotate them between charger and discharge service.  Admittedly low tech, but my receiver is nearly hash free even though I'm right square in the bowels of a residential area.  And its not hard.  I've wired everything up with Anderson Powerpole connectors and I just swap out a batt before bed, while plugging in my cell phone.  To my thinking its a lot easier than an on (and on and on) going quest to root out noise.  My free time is too precious to waste on all that plugging and chugging.  I wish you good luck in slaying your noise dragon...
