I think that I am now receiving it. Seems to go through some deep fades. I have two receivers on two different antennas and sometimes I will hear it only on one radio, sometimes on both

I set the SDR to monitor around 8000 kHz at 1000z. At 1114z, it showed up on 7998.4. Very interesting how it just suddenly appeared, like a switch was thrown. Propagation is fun.
Also getting that unknown long term dasher around 8000.3. No idea if that is a hobbyist beacon, or something else.

JUNE 7 0100 UTC WEAK BUT IN THERE

the hiker.. it is coming in with a very nice signal this evening.
I was going to disconnect all the antennas because of the storms
headed this way.
I turned on the sdr (Afedri) and it was setting on 7998khz
and there was the dasher on 7998.30 it is just about the noise
but audible. I've been watching for this one for awhile.
Nice to see it back.

Chuck I have not been able to hear the 7998.3 dasher...IMO I think your hearing
a different beacon from the Hiker that is 7998.5 and a dash every 3 secs.
I wonder what the dash rate is of the 7998.3 beacon?
I could be wrong they might be the same beacon.. thanks for posting.
-
Hi Tesla. tuned in again tonight and even with the high static levels
the beacon was popping it head about the noise.
I measured the frequency at 7998.315 and the dashes were
spaced at 3 seconds.
A couple of times it stuttered and sent a second dash 1 second later
then recouped to it's normal sequence.
Interesting though.
I did see a couple of very weak dashes but very intermittently on
7998.500, you could just barely make them out on the water fall.
I will keep an eye out for the other one.
good dx'ing

7998.510 KHz Hiker, fair signal with slow fades
-
I wasn't able to listen this morning but glad you caught the Hiker...always has been a thrill for me
to hear it...maybe this fall and winter it will have better condx to propagate, seems like you and I are the only ones hearing it...makes me believe
no one ever listens for the 8 mHz signals anylonger

I have to thank you for starting this thread and making me aware of Hiker. I have the list of beacons plus the Russian ones programmed in so I try to give each one a listen. A waterfall display helps a lot in case the beacon's center frequency has shifted due to age or temperature. Sometimes I just let the radio sit on one frequency to see if a beacon will suddenly pop up. I especially like catching the Inyo Whooper that way in the morning.

7998.490 KHz Hiker, very strong, mild fading
-
S beacon was around 8000.5 many many years ago when I first heard it and started listening to 8Mc often...
With all the pot growers in the Colorado area I have heard signals around 8 Mc from those operations at times...not so much of resent.
All that said, 8Mc is a unique watering hole for a lot of strange signals and a good radio mystery is always great fun.
-
Aug 6.....this morning Hiker was in there light copy at 1215 utc...
-
I am new to these beacons and you guys got me interested in this "hikers beacon"
I tried all day unsuccessfully to hear anything on 7998.3 and then tonight I was surprised to here what I believe is the beacon. It was very weak around 0000z hours but it started to come up to about S3-4 around 0100z (7 Aug 2016). I connected a 3 foot loop antenna and I was surprised to hear it but just faintly. It appears to be coming from the southwest - does that sound right?
I tried to Google the term but I didn't really find any info other than what is on HFU.
-
August 8 .....Old Hiker is sounding good this morning time 1200 utc maybe the best I have heard it...

-
hi late post..
last night around 0135z when I tuned to 7998.00
I could see 7998.30 coming in pretty strong, audible
most of the time then around 0150z the .5 beacon started
come in but rather weak most of the time. It did get to the point of being audible
several times but then faded out for good.
.3 hung in there for some time
going to go and see whats happening there tonight.

I'm copying Hiker at 7998.19 kHz. The signal fades in and out, but definitely strong in between fades.
Question: Why is it named Hiker?

Years ago the initial owner of the beacon hiked into remote areas and put the beacon out running off a solar panel and sometimes a battery.
The initial owner gave it away to a guy that has it put in a jeep with a vertical antenna...so often it is at different locations now that its home is a jeep.
Hope that helps...the info. I gave you came to me from a source way down the line so I don't know even if it is accurate...I forget the Hiker 2 freq...I have heard it now and then but it was sometime ago...I would have to look over my logs.
Merry Christmas
