Title: 179 Australian NDB's terminated 26th May 2016...
Post by: Looking-Glass on May 23, 2016, 0413 UTC
A total of 165 Australian NDB beacons will be progressively turned off permanently from 0200hrs AEST 26th May 2016 (1600z 25th May GMT date/time) as part of the introduction to GNSS technology in the Australian aviation sector. :o

The 165 NDB's are the property of Air Services Australia, so there will be a small number of private beacons remaining on air as too some military NDB's, they will also be decommissioned in the near future I expect.

These 165 beacons are in addition to those already turned off during the past 18 months such as BRW Brewarrina on 281KHz etc.

A sad time for Australian and Pacific NDB DXers, but technology marches on.  Air Services Australia informed me that as far as they know New Zealand and Pacific Island NDB's will remain on air. ???

On a positive side, it will probably free up some space and enable possible reception of some overseas beacons previously hard or near impossible to log due to our local NDB's on air. ::)

A full list of the NDB's being decomissioned appears on the Air Services Australia web site under the Navaids section.
