Title: Sorcerer decoder
Post by: flexoman61 on August 27, 2016, 1145 UTC
Anyone using the Sorcerer decoder? What I want to decode with it is
Stanag-4285.

I read a few reviews online that complained about malware and Trojans and a few
other problems like hogging too much of the CPU.

My only worries are the Trojans and viruses and things like that.
Poor performance was another complaint but I'm not worried about that.
I just don't want to screw up my laptop, if the program doesn't work well
I'll get rid of it.

Here is an article on Sorcerer: http://mt-utility.blogspot.com/2011/12/why-sorcerer-wont-be-on-my-next.html

Thanks for any input.

Keep in mind that Sorcerer is not free or shareware.  I guess the best description for it would be orphaned ware.  The company who wrote it no longer exists (sort of, I think the same basic people do Krypto500 now) and it has not been officially distributed for a long time.  So many of the download sites for the software are from suspicious sources, like crack and hack sites.

The original software itself had no real issues with trojans or malware, but who knows what has been done to it since, or what is in the package you DL from a hack / crack site.

The software is also rather old, and can have issues with modern hardware and OS's.

Sorcerer will demod S4285, however keep in mind most S4285 is encrypted, so you get nothing from it.  There are a few unencoded S4285 outlets, and Sorcerer will work fine on those.

I used a several times this site for downloading of sorcerer:
http://www.kd0cq.com/2013/07/sorcerer-decoder-download/ (http://www.kd0cq.com/2013/07/sorcerer-decoder-download/)
I never had a problem (on Win7, Win8 and Win10) and checked it with some malware and virus scanners and never got a warning.
But of course it has some bugs and not all modes are decoded correctly. Sometimes it is crashing (for me always by using PACTOR-III)

A good alternative for Stanag-4285 decoding is Sigmira: http://www.saharlow.com/technology/sigmira/ (http://www.saharlow.com/technology/sigmira/)
