Title: RETRO RECEIVER REVIEW #10 - The DRAKE SPR-4
Post by: VK3BVW on June 09, 2017, 0947 UTC

It’s been nearly three months since we published our last Retro Review by special MEDXR contributor Craig Seager VK2HBT. But this time, he has come up with a classic receiver for us to explore.

I know a lot of guys back then used those for MW DXing, and SWLing also. Saw enough of them in DXing shack pictures in the mags like PopComm and the like.

I've got a Drake T/R 4 series combo. For pure dx'ing that receiver is the King of The Shack and that includes it's younger brother the R-8. It's overkill for hunting pirates.

An oldie but a goodie, Drake had a great reputation for quality equipment.

I seen a Drake SPR-4 once at Wyong Field Day for $155, it was still sitting on the table at the Flea Market when I left four hours later.

Had a Drake SSR-1 in the late 1970's, good little set for the time.   ;D
