Title: DXing Baseball April 20-21, 2018
Post by: Ct Yankee on April 20, 2018, 2301 UTC
The first go of it of the year.  As always, stations are at least 75 miles away from my home base in south central Connecticut.  Will be updated throughout the evening.  All are flagship unless noted.

2255z WFAN 660 am New York City Excellent Reception. Blue Jays at Yankees. Pre-game show, Suzyn Waldman giving starting line ups.  Mentions it is first MLB game for Jay second baseman Lourdes Gurriel, Jr.  "It is 45 degrees here."

2304z WADO 1280 am New York City Excellent Reception. Blue Jays at Yankees (in Spanish). Rickie Ricardo (really his name) gives list of advertisers while Yankee theme song plays in background.  Sonny Gray pitches to Curtis Granderson, Granderson flies out for first out of game.  Third out recorded, no score after a half inning.

2329z WOR 710 am New York City Excellent Reception. Mets at Braves.  Howie Rose with pre-game discussion on plight of Matt Harvey as a starting pitcher. Newcomb facing Conforto to open game, called strike one - 92mph fast ball.  Inning ending double play, no score after a half inning.

2349z WTEM 980 am Washington, DC Fair reception.  Indians at Orioles "1-1 the count. 1-0 Indians in the top of the third. 3-1 pitch to Ramirez" (Oriole affiliate station)

2359z CKGM 690 am Montreal (in English) Good reception. Blue Jays at Yankees. "That was a fastball called strike one.  Nest pitch is low.  Gray's 2-1 pitch is a called strike. Granderson now with a full count walks on ball four. First pitch to Hernandez, this one will be out of here.  It's tied up at 2 in the top of the third." (Blue Jay affiliate station)

0022z WYUS 930 am Milford, DE Fair Reception Indians at Orioles "Buck Showalter is talking with the umpire.  It's a two out RBI double and the game is tied 1-1 here in the fourth." (Oriole Radio Affiliate)

0029z WVMT 620 am Burlington, VT  Good Reception Blue Jays at Yankees "Ball four and now the bases are loaded with Jays. Fly ball to left field and that will end the inning, 5-4 Blue Jays middle of the fourth" (Yankee Radio Affiliate)

0036z WLW 700 am Cincinnati Good Reception Reds at Cardinals "That will be a ground rule double for Molina to drive in two runs for the Cardinals as they take 2-0 lead here in the bottom of the first."

A mixed bag of results in the first attempt, on the downside:
1) Chicago and St. Louis stations could not be received
2) NBA playoff games bumped the Nationals and Indians off their 50,000 flagships
3) 830 am Reading, PA (Phillies) was not received

On the plus side:
1) Toronto's affiliate in Montreal is tricky due to reception or being bumped for Hockey, Soccer, or CFL.
2) The Oriole affiliates were a pleasant surprise - The DC station frequently gets overpowered here by a station in Lowell, MA.  The Delaware affiliate is in its first year on the network.

I could have stayed up past 0215z to log a Red Sox broadcast but jet lag is still an issue (plus, who wants to listen to them any way?  ;)).  Very applaudable start.

You could say the same thing about the Reds.

Except for WLW, I think every sports station in Indiana and Ohio was running the Cavs - Pacers game? It was rough second half for the Cavs.

I've been noticing the East-West phenomena, too. Longer twilight's as we get into mid-spring is my guess.

The north-south reception was exceptionally good. I think I pulled in WWFE 670 am in Miami (Spanish) while trying for WSCR Chicago 670 am.  It's the only North America Spanish station, after that its Argentina.  If it was WWFE, my first Florida catch.

What do the Reds and Income taxes have in common?  You don't have to think about them after the middle of April.   :)

Nice reporting. I haven't been trying too hard to DX baseball, but I did hear a bit of the AAA matchup between the Albuquerque Isotopes visiting the Tacoma Rainiers on 770 on Monday evening (April 16, or the 17th if you want to go by UTC). I forget the station, but it's in Albuquerque and is powerful enough to be copied nightly in Denver.

4-24-18  0350Z  Nationals @ Giants on 1140 AM WRVA Richmond VA.  Nice signal, sounded like a local with just an occasional touch of static to let you know you were listening to baseball the way it was meant to be listened to... on AM.  WRVA almost always has a big signal in here at night.

Pinto -

Thanks for the tip on WRVA, I never logged the station previously and had no clue they were on the Nationals network.  I received the station fairly well both Tuesday morning and just now with ID (835utc Apr 25) which was before/after Nationals game.
