Title: FISHING NET BEACONS

Post by: sydjohn on January 25, 2011, 0329 UTC: I don't know if it's a fishing net beacon, but I've been hearing a very weird beacon on 75 meters. It's at 3.810 LSB, it may be a amateur radio propagation beacon from another country. But it beeps every 5 seconds, then I hear something like a man speaking in what sounds like spanish, like it's reading off the time. Or maybe a GPS location. My antenna isn't the best so I make out what he's saying.

The station you are describing is HD2IOA, a time station out of Ecuador, the beeps are every 10 seconds.

Thanks Token, that is definitely it. The ducks down on 75 were describing it as a beacon, they had no idea it was an Ecuadorian time station.

Yep! Here's a mini-log of fishnet beacons I've been hearing between 1720 & 1800 khz. The 1725 khz beacon probably isn't fishing related as it doesn't match the patterns of the rest, it's still a mystery. "?" means the signal was too weak to copy the full ID. These are all very faint signals that would be difficult to discover without the aid of the SDR's waterfall display - see screenshots below. These beacons are thought to run about 4 to 10 watts output, locations unknown, and a challenge to hear:

Post by: dit-man on February 25, 2011, 0404 UTC: Last fall here in the Northeast, I heard one exactly on 1812kHz, active for several days. Have not heard any since, suspect due to winter season.

I'm hearing all sorts of fishnet beacons tonight in the upper portion of 160m. 1925, 1927, 1937, 1941, 1947, 1958, 1985, etc. etc. They come and go. I missed a few frequencies but it's a fishnet beacon extravaganza tonight :p Watching that waterfall and seeing all the different weak beacons come and go is something.
