Title: AOR AR-8600 MK-II any comments?
Post by: Looking-Glass on July 08, 2018, 2310 UTC
This is the last radio I will be looking at to replace the humble but rotten Tecsun-2000 bed side radio.

Reading numerous reports via Google show that their are many who are unhappy with the AOR AR-8600 MK-II, especially on the Medium Wave and Shortwave bands, also ease of operation with many complaining that it is a hard radio to master for simple tasks and you need to read the manual really well and have it handy at all times.

AM and SW band overload on AM appears often in the comments, and "fiddly/confusing" function buttons.

I don't really need the VHF/UHF bands this way so I think I will give this receiver a miss, as one SWLer in the UK mentioned..."for just a comms receiver it's a really complicated and confusing piece of work, reasonably pleased with it on VHF/UHF but lacks somewhat on HF bands."

It's priced at AUD$1,000 which tends me to lean back towards the Alinco DX-R* which is the same price, or the cheaper Icom R-75... ::)

Subject is now closed...have settled for the Icom R-75 comms receiver, don't have a lot of interest in VHF/UHF so sort of a waste and cannot be bothered with, at my age, twiddly knobs and complicated button/function features... 8)

A friend has my old Drake R8, makes for a good bedside rig from what he says.
