Title: Michigan NDB logs
Post by: pinto vortando on July 15, 2018, 1708 UTC
All Michigan all the time.
Heard the following beacons this morning just before sunrise:

278  ADG   Adrian
332  PH     Port Huron
338  DE     Detroit
336  MA     Cadillac  (miskeys as MET)
359  GYG   Grayling
365  TV     Traverse City
382  IRS    Sturgis
382  SJX    Beaver Island  (never got the full ID on this one, mixing with IRS and XU London ON on same freq)
400  CI      Sault Ste. Marie

not heard:  257  MB  Saginaw Tri-City ???
269  FN  Flint Bishop (was decommissioned in May this year)

Just want to get these logged while they are still on the air...  we've lost at least 5 in the past several years.
Anybody else with Michigan logs feel free to post 'em here.

Funny... SJX, I was trying for quite a while to get that one last night but never did.

SJX is a common daytimer here being only 480 km away and propagating mainly right down the lake.  I am noting it today at 1411 with a good signal.  SJX traditionally has a weak LSB and that is indeed the case today.

SJX is an infrequent visitor here.

Have not heard 257  MB  Saginaw all week.  Propagation has been mostly wall to wall static lately but in the past it has had good sigs in here day and night regardless.

btw...  interesting Manistee and Saginaw same identifier only 3 kc and less than 150 mi apart

Been hearing 257 MB Saginaw again the past couple of days.
If it was out of service, it got a new lease on life.

Have not heard  332 PH Port Huron all week.
This has been an off again, on again beacon...  stay tuned.
Meanwhile, FIS Key West has been holding down the freq
with QT Thunder Bay ON and YFM LaGrande 4 QC competing
for the 400 cycle offset.

Oh cool I don't listen TOO much to the NDBs...but they help me learn Morse. And I didn't realize MI has so many...I guess with all the Canadian NDBs I just didn't think about it! Thanx for the log!

Incidentally, I'm hearing DULUTH beacon DL on 379 KHz right now...(obviously not Michigan!)

What is the 'AA' beacon I just heard on 364 KHz? 11:23z ...it seems to have stopped now. Am i just not copying it? Or is this like an American Airlines thing...?

Nice! My mother lives there. I'll have to listen for it

NDB AA on 365 is associated with the Fargo ND airport but the beacon itself is located off of the field and is actually in Minnesota.
btw... this was the destination airport of "The Day the Music Died" flight

344  ES     Escanaba
359  GYG  Grayling
365  TV     Traverse City
400  CI     Sault Ste. Marie

Try 410 SO Marquette... had a good signal in here this morning before dawn, you may even be able to hear it during daytime at your location.

Just noting that AP 206 was logged this AM for the first time in over 7 months.

Bring out your dead!

Have never been able to log this one.
Also, 254  MB  Manistee remains elusive while 336  MA in next door Wexford County is heard quite often...  strange.

338 DE Detroit has been off the air for at least the  past two days.  This one has been on the chopping block for a while...
could this be the end ?  Anyway, ZEM Eastmain QC appears to have taken over the 338 slot in here.

Meanwhile, on again, off again beacon 332 PH Port Huron remains in the "off again" mode.

@Pinto Vortando, about CI on 400 at Sault Ste. Marie Michigan, I was stationed at Kincheloe air force base 20 miles (32km) south of the Soo back in 1968 and 1969. I remember SSM on 400khz with several hundred watts. It was at the Sault Ste. Marie Michigan airport. It had a weather report over the morse ID. I actually saw the transmitter once and remember the modulation transformer was loud enough to hear clearly with the voice and morse code ID. There was also a beacon on 410 on an island in Lake Superior. The island had a French name but I think it was in US waters because it had a 1khz ID tone instead of 400hz.

William,

Thanks for the history.

Nowadays, IIRC,  transcribed weather broadcasts (TWEB) via NDBs or VORs are only available in Alaska.

Was the beacon on the island perhaps a marine beacon ?

Haven't posted any Michigan NDBs in a while.
Heard these this morning in the sub-zero pre-dawn darkness... all still on the air with good sigs:

332     PH     Port Huron  (St. Clair Co. airport)
336     MA    Cadillac  (been miskeying as MET for years)
365     TV     Traverse City
381.5  SJX   Beaver Is.
382     IRS    Sturgis  (not the motorcycle Sturgis)
400     CI      Sault Ste Marie  (big signal in here today)
