I'm not one hundred percent certain, but I think I pulled in WFED (from Washington, DC) tonight. The station was booming into the Tunxis Hill section of Fairfield, CT. As WFED is a fifty thousand watt station, and there's no other immediate local on 1500, it was probably them. The only thing that makes me question this is the fact that I received the signal via a car radio.
The station in question was airing the "Jim Bohannon Show", and the reception quality was very good. Via Google Maps, I see that WFED's transmitter location is a full two hundred and fifty miles away from Fairfield. If this indeed was them, I consider this to be one of my more notable recent catches.
Thoughts?

WFED's night signal covers the entire eastern seaboard - every single coastal state. So it had to be them. Here in Denver I can get some 50 kW stations that are further from me than you are from DC in my car so there' no issue with that.

A lot of car radios I've used can tend to be more sensitive than a portable radio or any other radio. If i want to dx on am at night, car radio or portable far away from house can work better than anything inside.

Agreed. WFED (I still find myself calling it "WTOP") is a powerhouse signal and can be received nightly roughly 100 miles south of the transmitter site. During the winter it is receivable on stock car radios into the morning hours without a problem.

If you want to try a few more distant stations that are relatively easy to pick up in Connecticut after nightfall:
700am - WLW Cincinnati
760am - WJR Detroit
900am - CHML Hamilton, Ont.
1020am - KDKA Pittsburgh
1100am - WTAM Cleveland (if the Long Island station sign off as regulated)
1110am - WBT Charlotte, NC
1140am - WRVA Roanoke, VA
1520am - WWKB Buffalo
-
Also try for 1040 WHO out of Des Moines Ia.

1140 kHz WRVA is out of Richmond, VA - not Roanoke, VA (both "RVA" I know) :D

I've pulled in all of those before, the only exception being WRVA. Never heard WHO yet....also have tried, on occasion, to hear WLS out of Chicago....no luck. Perhaps it is too close to WCBS-AM to be heard around here.
