Title: Unid Pirate? 8284.50 USB 21:17 UTC 25 September 2018
Post by: shadypyro on September 25, 2018, 2125 UTC
Hi all.
On the Point Reyes SDR, i heard music and some distorted voices. Did a search for 8284 USB and nothing came up, would this be a pirate or something else?

Chris.

Probably something else. Likely Peskies or other outbanders.

8195 kHz to 8815 kHz is the 8 MHz marine mobile band so Chris' theory could be on track.  The marine bands are favorite hangouts for freebanders and, well, the legal users of maritime mobile allocations, fishing fleets and the like.  8285 kHz USB is ITU HF-SSB marine channel 831 (simplex or ship transmit frequency) so that also fits (well, sort of).
