Title: CFVP 6030 AM 1810 UTC 12 Oct 2018
Post by: Treehouse SWL on October 12, 2018, 1835 UTC
Despite reports this past week on "World of Radio" and some SWL websites that it may be off the air, I heard CFVP this morning at 1810 UTC with its usual relay of Calgary’s CKMX.

At 1812 UTC, after airing a male comic, an ID ran with the station’s “Funny 1060” slogan, then a Ronnie White routine into T.J. Miller. At 1817 UTC, a station promo ran about a charity drive into a commercial break at 1818 UTC.

The station’s signal was fair to good at the peaks, but with a slight whistle on the frequency and considerable fading and hiss, as well as some static. According to this, https://www.wwdxc.de/topnews.shtml, the station may not be running more than 30-50 watts.

Can I ask where you heard this, via SDRs in Canada, or in northern U.S. or at your QTH?

Sure - all my loggings are from my QTH, which is just a few blocks north of downtown Lake Stevens, WA 98258. GPS coordinates are Latitude: 48.021463 / Longitude: -122.06718.

It's less than 500 miles in a straight line from here to Calgary.

I just got back into shortwave listening in July, and between my three kids, work, etc., my listening time is a bit limited, so I haven't played around with SDRs and the like.

Thanks, wondering how you managed this considering Radio Marti on 6030 which is a continuing challenge for anyone looking to hear CFVP...

True - East Coasters like you (my wife grew up in Gaithersburg and still has friends in North Potomac, so I know your area pretty well) probably can't hear CFVP during daytime hours too often.

That's the only time to hear it, because once Radio Marti via Greenville signs on 6030 kHz around 0000 UTC (and then stays on for about 12 hours, I think), it dominates that frequency even here and obliterates any sign of CFVP.

Following up on Snohomish Scoop's comment, I was able to copy CFVP a few times last winter after Marti signed off. Being out west and in the dark when they are broadcasting without any interference helps.

Of course that raises the question as to why they bother, because I doubt anyone in Alberta (the presumed target area) will be able to hear it better than Marti. That signal may be beamed to Cuba but it covers most of North America very well, based on reports I've seen.
