Title: Sad News: Don Schimmel has passed away
Post by: Strange Beacons on February 04, 2019, 0108 UTC
Sad News: I just learned today that Don Schimmel has passed away at the age of 91. Don worked in communications with the U.S. Navy and CIA. He is best remembered by radio hobbyists as the author of the book, "The Underground Frequency Guide" and the online column about radio oddities, "Radio Intrigue." SK

The title of Don's book The Underground Frequency Guide was the inspiration for the name of this site.

Sorry to hear that. I met him at a Winter SWL Fest about 20-25 years ago & had a brief, pleasant chat.

...Dipped in what?

Chocolate? Powdered sugar? Molasses? Poop?

That is an excellent legacy.

The Underground Frequency Guide is the book that really launched me into this sub-region of the radio hobby (that and childhood memories of monitoring strange signals on my uncle's old shortwave radio at night when I was supposed to be sleeping).

All I ever had was the Confidential Frequency List. And of course Passport.

RIP, Don. I know the Confidential Frequency List wasn't his book, but since someone mentioned it, that book was also one that launched my interest in shortwave. After I got a scanner and a CB radio as a kid, I obsessively checked out every single book about radio that the local library had. Mostly ARRL stuff but, oddly, they had a copy of the Confidential Frequency List and I obsessed over it until I could cajole my parents into getting me a shortwave receiver. The abbreviated, terse descriptions of odd things heard on a frequency (example I still remember: "Tailpipe Perky") had me convinced I was going to be listening to spies and intrigue nonstop.
