MOSCOW (WASHINGTON POST) - Russian officials reported a brief spike in radiation levels after a blast during a missile test killed two people at a Barents Sea military facility near shipyards that produce nuclear submarines.
A "short-term increase in radiation" was detected in the port city of Severodvinsk at 11.50am, according to a statement from the local administration.

It is still a mystery what prompt the jump in radiation and why the nuclear fuel carrier “Serebryanka” is still at anchor in the closed-off waters a few nautical miles outside Nenoksa military test site in the White Sea.
The ship belongs to Rosatomflot and is normally at port at the base for nuclear-powered icebreakers in Murmansk. In the 1980s and very early 90s, “Serebryanka” was used to transport liquid radioactive waste from the Atomflot facility in Murmansk to dedicated dumping areas in the Barents Sea.
In recent years, the ship has transported liquid radioactive waste from Atomflot to a treatment facility in Severodvinsk, as well as operated between Nerpa and Skhval naval yards on the Kola Peninsula and Atomflot in Murmansk. The ship has also transported containers with spent nuclear fuel from the closed-down naval base of Gremikha.
Interesting, the information about the increased radiation, first published on Thursday at 14.23, was removed from the city authorities’ portal Friday afternoon and is now just a dead-link. Russian Explosion Victims Hit By Radiation, Media Reports
At least six victims of a military site explosion in northern Russia have allegedly been taken to Moscow with radiation exposure, according to unconfirmed media reports published a day after the mysterious blast.
Authorities in a nearby city reported a brief spike in radiation Thursday when a rocket engine blew up at the testing site in the Arkhangelsk region, killing two and injuring six.
Russia’s Baza Telegram channel published the names of six people who it said were allegedly transported on two planes to Moscow for treatment.
“According to several Russian Defense Ministry sources, all the clothes of those who were wounded have already been burned,” it reported Friday.
“The same has been done with the hazmat suits and clothes of the doctors who first helped the victims.”
An attached video of several ambulances claims to show the vehicles wrapped in film and drivers wearing hazmat suits.
A BBC correspondent in Moscow tweeted that the Defense Ministry has declined to comment on Baza’s reports.

Russia’s nuclear energy agency has said an explosion that caused radiation levels to spike in the Arkhangelsk region was caused by an accident during a test of an “isotope power source for a liquid-fuelled rocket engine”.
In a statement released late on Friday, Rosatom said five of its employees had died as a result of the accident and three more were being treated for burns.
Rosatom’s description of the incident could indicate it was testing the nuclear-powered cruise missile Burevestnik mentioned during a speech by Vladimir Putin last year.

Four Russia-based nuclear monitoring stations have gone offline after the Aug. 8 explosion at a missile testing facility in the country.
The Arkhangelsk authorities will purchase gas masks with radiation protection worth 4.6 million rubles. In response to a request to comment on the purchase, the regional governor said: “Stop spreading nonsense.”

Also, I suspect this meesile was like one of the cobalt bomb thingys that we used to have in inventory, a wonderful bomb that flew along spewing radioactive substances at random, rendering the countryside inhospitable for generations.
