Title: KVNS 1700 Brownsville TX
Post by: East Troy Don on September 10, 2019, 0412 UTC
1700 KHZ @ 0353 UTC 10 Sept 19 .   NFL chat with erratic fading.    Commercial block @ 0358 then what was an underlying Latino station (either KKLF out of Richardson TX or XEPE out of Tijuana) mudding up everything.  Latino station stayed steady underneath after the KVNS ID @ 0401 UTC.

KVNS NITE POWER: 1 KW .  TX<>RX :  1,274 Miles

KKLF NITE POWER: 0.88 KW .  TX<>RX:   813 Miles
XEPE NITE POWER:    10 KW . TX<> RX:   1,707 Miles

Can remember XEPE as ESPN 1700 until late last year (& sometimes mixing with Fox Sports Brownsville), at 10kW nighttime its suppose to be directional into the Pacific.

KVNS switched from an AOR format a few years back to ESPN. It may have been them instead of Tijuana.

Except the 0401 utc I'd KVNS which still leaves the question of which Latino station was underneath.

I can't remember if it was last winter or the winter before, but I caught a station from Hermosillo on that frequency. It shocked me as not only did it have to propagate over the two Sierra ranges both east and west, but most of the northern Mexican deserts to make from Hermosillo on the Gulf of California to my house in the S.E. US.

Brownsville is fairly easy as much of it is over a salt water path from here. Hermosillo? That's nothing but rocks and dirt all the way.

Which is why I'm leaning toward KKLF in  Richardson TX. as much for distance as anything else. I couldn't null out KVNS enough to snatch an ID on the Hispanohablante.
Now, your Hermisillo catch, now THAT'S impressive.

"XEPE NITE POWER:    1 KW . TX<> RX:   1,707 Miles"
What is the source of this?

Its 10 KW, not 1 KW . I read the attendant article erroneously.  Thanks.
