Welcome to the RF basement.
Seems like there are a lot of NDBs in Iowa... should be plenty there for you to log. :)
If you plan on using a wire antenna, longer is generally better.
What ham rig are you using for RX ?

There's a small airstrip about every 20 miles in Iowa, it seems.

Welcome to the fold! Looking forward to your logs!
Per the NDB List, there are currently 20 NDBs listed as active in IA. Of that 20, there may be 7 or 8 that are not actually on the air at this time.

I'm using a Kenwood TS-570 for RX right now. Not the best, but it does work, was surprised by the Ontario and Texas hits the other day.
I acquired a Polomar VLF converter and will use that at some point. Once the mowing is done for the year, I'm thinking of running a few hundred feet of wire along the property line and fence height. See how that works.

I found the Kw 570, 850, and 870 to be excellent vlf rx boxen. As in I could tune in wwvb at almost any time of day or night with a ocfd as antennae.

Didn't know that the 570 could tune below 500kc... apparently, it can.
Still plenty of NDBs in Ontario to log in spite of the ongoing decommissionings... catch 'em while you can.
"A few hundred feet of wire"... sounds great, go for it ! (may want to consider some type of matching device).
